USC reportedly will not sign one of the top commitments in its 2016 class. According to JC Shurburtt of TheBigSpur, RB Tyren Jones of Hutchinson JC, KS will not be signed by the Gamecocks for academic reasons. Shurburtt cited sources for his information. Jones, a native of Marietta, GA, signed with Alabama out of high school before being dismissed from the program.
The loss of Jones puts USC back at 22 newcomers for the 2016 roster and leaves the Gamecocks with two running backs in the class.
Meantime, the Gamecocks continue with their efforts to turn WR Jeriko Morris from his Southern Miss commitment. Morris made an official visit over the weekend and his coach said Monday the Gamecocks are very much in the mix.
“I think he’s really kind of conflicted right now,” said coach Stephen Rice. “I think he’s really confused. He said he had a great time out there. He was impressed with the campus, really liked the dorms, said everybody was real nice.”
Working in USC’s favor is the change in the coaching staff at Southern Miss. New coach Jay Hopson had recruited Morris early for Alcorn State but has not contacted him since getting to Hattiesburg. And Morris’ main recruiter from Southern Miss is not staying.
“I asked Jerico this morning if he could make a decision and he said coach I really don’t know,” Rice said. “Right now I think he’s 50-50 on the fence. Last week when he went up there I’d have said South Carolina’s chances are about 20%. Right now I’d say it’s about 50-50.”
USC receivers coach Bryan McClendon talked with Rice Sunday. The plan is for Morris to sign Wednesday at 10:00 AM Eastern Time.
“He talked about going straight JUCO route and looking at his opportunities afterwards,” Rice said. “If we can get him qualified he can leave after one semester of junior college ball. He’s as good a receiver as out there in the country. He just hasn’t had the exposure.”
Morris is one of a handful of USC targets who will announce Wednesday. The others are WR Korey Banks, DE Jacoby Hill, DE Aaron Thompson, WR Randrecous Davis, TE Hank Tuipulotu, DL Karamo Dioubate, DB Marlon Character, DE Malcolm Roach and DL Stephon Taylor.
