Saturday's scrimmage will give South Carolina's secondary one more audition before the team starts officially preparing for Texas A&M on Monday.

The final decision on the rotation, however, won't be made until Aug. 28, Lorenzo Ward said after Thursday's practice.

"We'll definitely wait until gameday, but I think guys will position themselves," Ward said. "We'll know who we need to practice after Saturday's scrimmage and who needs to be getting the reps."

Senior Brison Williams and true freshman Al Harris Jr. continue to practice as the first-team cornerbacks. Freshmen Chris Lammons and Wesley Green remain in line to play and likely won't redshirt, Ward said.

Strong safety Chris Moody has joined free safety Chaz Elder on the first-team defense. Moody, listed behind Kadetrix "J.J." Marcus on the preseason depth chart, played well in last weekend's scrimmage and has been more consistent in practice, Ward said.

"You've got to do it when we do it in the stadium," Ward said. "J.J. is still fighting and T.J. Gurley is still fighting. It's a great competition with the four guys back there."

Moody, a redshirt sophomore, played in 12 games in 2013, mostly on special teams. He saw his most action against Tennessee, recording three tackles with Elder sidelined with an injury and Marcus out of the game because of a targeting ejection.

"He just has to be more consistent, and he's been consistent here lately," Ward said of Moody.

The safety spot is in good hands if the team decides to keep Williams at corner, Ward said.

Freshman D.J. Smith is practicing at strong safety for the first time this week after missing the first part of camp because of wisdom teeth removal. Ward said he wasn't sure yet whether or not Smith will redshirt.
