USC stretching recruiting map to Hawaii
Phil Kornblut Sports Updates For Feb. 08, 2019
Mason Tufaga
USC football coach Will Muschamp, as he stated at his press conference on signing day Wednesday, sees a recruiting footprint that is growing for his program. South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina always will be the base, but in 2019 Muschamp pulled a quarterback from California and a cornerback from Texas.
In 2020, Muschamp is eyeing a 2021 linebacker from Honolulu in Mason Tufaga 6'1" 180lbs. The Gamecocks offered earlier this week, the first program east of the Rockies to do so.
“To be real honest with you, I know nothing about South Carolina,” Tufaga said. “But what stands out most to me is coach Hutzler (linebacker coach). He sees something in me and believes that I can get the job done all though he hasn’t seen me in person.”
Tufaga also has offers from Hawaii, Oregon, Oregon State, Southern Cal and Utah. It’s early in the process for Tufaga and South Carolina is a long way from home, but he’s by no means discounting that offer.
“I take all offers into consideration, whatever benefits my family and my future,” he said. ” For sure, I’m going to keep all my options open.”
