Has passed out of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee today and will move forward. I expect that this bill (or a very similar compromise) will pass eventually and be signed by the governor because of the anger and blowback generated by the Caslen hire.

There are 2 fundamental changes: it removes the governor and the superintendent of education from USC’s board, and reduces the number of board members from 20 to 12 by aligning the representation with congressional districts rather than judicial districts. Trustees are still elected by the politicians. This is a response to the issues that arose during our presidential search.  Will this help any? To not enough but maybe a start. What you say?

USC trustees chastised at hearing over remaking college board: ‘The process isn’t working’

COLUMBIA — House lawmakers considering changes to the size of the University of South Carolina’s governing board delivered a rebuke to its chairman Wednesday, telling him the move should be considered a vote of no confidence. (VIEW ARTICLE) THE POST & COURIER

I have mixed feelings about this one.  I definitely think the current structure has some issues; however, I hate to see politicians assume they know best on how to structure the new board.  Removing the governor as a board member is probably a good thing in terms of reducing political influence.
