South Carolina football came close to potentially being favored against a Top-25 team. Instead the Gamecocks will welcome in a 7-1 squad as underdogs in Appalachian State. USC opened as a four-point favorite against a team only a few years into its time in FBS. The former FCS power won the Sun Belt and 11 games last season.
The Mountaineers lost to Georgia Southern last week. They’re in their first year with Eliah Drinkwitz after Scott Satterfield went to Louisville. The Gamecocks are 4-5 and looking to move a win away from bowl eligibility. App. State is 5-3 against the spread, of losing as a 14-point favorite. The Gamecocks are 5-4 and covered against Vandy.
I watched some of their game with UNC. (UNC was down 5 starters to injury). UNC gave up a strip sack returned for a TD and an interception deep in their territory that led to a quick 14pts for AppSt within the first 17 min of the game.
On offense their QB runs the show. He’s allusive and accurate and they get the ball out quick but he will also challenge teams deep often. Their running game isn’t built to pound but rather to see if the RB can hit a seam and go. He can fly if he gets to open field. It’s an offense built on big plays.
On defense, they aren’t big but they fly to the ball. Rather than bull-rush, their Dline slips through blocks and makes a lot of shoestring tackles at the line of scrimmage and they blitz quite a bit. Very fast on the backside too and cover well.
The key is if our Dline can get pressure and keep their QB from escaping and running for 30 yards which he does often. Also have to cover their WRs when plays break down. I think we can pound them in the running game and if Ryan can get some time Edwards will present a huge mismatch for them especially down field. This is probably a game to nix the WR screens because they are so quick to the ball. They blew up all of UNCs attempts. Basically we need to pound, pound, pound, then go deep to Edwards.
I expect a frustrating game for our defense because they get the ball out quick and run tight routs. But I see opportunity in the run game and for a Edwards to have a monster game.,,
