The USC women's basketball team continues to maintain a high level of respect nationally.

After media attending the SEC Tipoff in Nashville picked the Gamecocks to win their fourth straight SEC championship, voters for USA Today's Preseason Top 25 have the Garnet third nationally behind top-ranked UConn and Notre Dame.

USC did receive three first-place votes.

Carolina will play its first game November 7, an exhibition against Benedict College with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.

Gamecocks women ranked No. 4 in AP preseason basketball poll

COLUMBIA — South Carolina is ranked No. 4 in a preseason AP Top 25 women's basketball poll that might be the first indication of parity in a sport long dominated by Connecticut.

The Gamecocks are still looking up at UConn — but the 11-time national champion Huskies are ranked third, with Notre Dame holding the top spot and Baylor ranked preseason No. 2. Each of the top four teams received first-place votes, with Notre Dame getting 14, Baylor 12, UConn six and USC 1.

South Carolina went 33-2 last season, winning its third consecutive SEC title and reaching the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks return two starters off that team, All-American forwards A’ja Wilson and Alaina Coates, and add a pair of former All-ACC transfers in guards Kaela Davis and Allisha Gray.

UConn went 38-0 last season en route to head coach Geno Auriemma’s 11th national title, but the Huskies lost three starters in Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck — also the three top selections in this year’s WNBA draft. UConn’s top two returning players are guards Katie Lou Samuelson and Kia Nurse, who averaged 11 and 9.3 points last season, respectively.
