SPARTANBURG
South Carolina’s new coaching staff is trying to get in the mix with Fort Dorchester offensive lineman John Simpson, but Will Muschamp and company have their work cut out for them.
Simpson, a Mr. Football finalist, is in Spartanburg for Shrine Bowl practice this week, and said after Monday morning’s workout that three schools are sticking out to him.
“I wasn’t trying to be too focused on recruiting because I wanted to focus on the high school season,” Simpson said. “Now I’ve started back a little bit. I’ve talked to Clemson, Florida, LSU. LSU is on me really hard.”
Simpson also has heard from South Carolina and Muschamp. The Gamecocks’ staff was at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday and watched as Simpson helped lead Fort Dorchester to a state title. Muschamp has let Simpson know he is a big priority.
“Coach Muschamp, he told me, ‘Man, you need to stay in state and help the in-state school out,’” Simpson said.
He was glad to get the news that former USC interim coach Shawn Elliott will remain on staff with the Gamecocks. Simpson said he and Elliott have a good relationship.
“Coach Elliott, he’s been there,” Simpson said. “He’s the only coach on their staff I know right now. He’s a great offensive line coach.”
Simpson would like to take all five official visits before making a decision, but isn’t sure if he will have time. He has made one official visit and knows of two other schools he will visit.
“I already went to LSU. Florida is going to get one and Clemson is going to get one,” he said.
Simpson is a four-star recruit and considered the No. 2 player in South Carolina, according to 247Sports.
He played guard for Fort Dorchester, but has been working at left tackle during Shrine Bowl practices.
“It’s pretty crazy because we’re in a two-point stance and I’m used to a three-point stance, but I’ll get used to it,” he said. “It’s just different taking steps and stuff.”
The 6-foot-4, 296-pounder is excited to spend the week with the best players from North and South Carolina.
“I feel like everybody’s even. Nobody is better than anybody else,” Simpson said. “As an offensive line, I feel like we’ve got a lot to work on because it’s our first day, but we’ve bonded like brothers.”
