South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday that quarterback Connor Shaw “should be able to suit up and play” this week at home against Missouri.
Shaw re-aggravated a shoulder injury in No. 7 USC’s 49-6 victory over UAB on Saturday. He suffered a hairline fracture Aug. 30 at Vanderbilt and missed the game after that against East Carolina.
Shaw practiced some last week and was cleared to start before the UAB contest.
“He should be very similar status-wise as last week,” Spurrier said. “Whether or not he can practice, we’ll have to wait and see and go from there.”
Shaw completed 8-of-14 passes for 107 yards with one touchdown and one interception before taking a hard hit and landing on the shoulder before the end of the first half.
Spurrier said Shaw’s shoulder shouldn’t require surgery.
“It’s just painful,” Spurrier said. “It’s not going to get any worse (the doctors) say. The doctors say this is not a serious-type fracture.”
Dylan Thompson replaced Shaw and threw for 211 yards and scored three touchdowns in the second half.
Protecting Shaw and/or Thompson is a top priority this week for Spurrier, who thinks the Tigers have a formidable defense.
“They’re very talented,” Spurrier said. “They’ve got a fierce pass rush and we’re looking forward to seeing if we can play a little bit better this coming weekend.”
He said that there could be some changes on the offensive line, which has not pass protected as well as he and line coach Shawn Elliott expect.
“We don’t really move the line of scrimmage,” Spurrier said. “Some of our guys go backward. Maybe that’s who we are. We wish we could control the line of scrimmage more.”
On the other side of the ball, Spurrier said Sunday that he’s waiting to hear this week if safety D.J. Swearinger will be suspended by the SEC office for a helmet-to-helmet hit against a UAB receiver that drew a penalty flag. The league is cracking down this year on illegal hits.
Spurrier thinks it was a similar shot to the one tight end Justice Cunningham took at Vanderbilt; there was no suspension after that game.
