One thing that was always an issue with me regarding the CWM staff, is there have been fundamental flaws and issues with the defense's tackling. This was the case in 2016, and it's still the case today. It reminds me of former baseball coach Chad Holbrook, and the constant issue with his teams regarding bunting in game situations. They could never get bunting down, even though it was a major aspect of Holbrook's teams. One day - either the last or next to last season he was at USC - someone with the press asked him, what could be done to fix/improve the team bunting, and I remember Holbrook saying something like, "I can't understand it, we've been a world champion bunting team in practice".
That led me to think, maybe it has something to do with how you practice bunting. Maybe the practice methodology was inferior, and while the team excelled at it, it didn't properly prepare the team for actual in-game situations against tough competition like the SEC.
Similar to this, I'm thinking that Coach Muschamp and staff are not good at teaching tackling fundamentals. It's going into 4 years now, and about the most consistent aspect of the Gamecock defense under Muschamp, is their steady inability to fundamentally execute form tackling.....
Brad Scott same issues tackling fundamentals etc. His players would get piggy back rides from Clemson running backs while they where heading into end-zone to score another TD.
Going to be honest here, If a QB has issues with poor throws inconsistencies his first 2 years they will most likely carry over the last 2. Just tendency like the left hook. They cannot change it. So all this talk about doing this doing that. They will fall back to those inconsistencies over and over. Why I thought he would change. Just all the talk. He will have good games then he will revert back to the old self and it always seems to be at the worse time. Just need to have a QB backup. If a freshmen can out play you - you need to take a set and let's see what we have. Like to see our freshman under center, Just maybe he can get this team energized.
Several talk about the defense, but when your QB keeps going 3 and out or 3 and Int. it makes it tough on any D. They held UNC for 3 qtrs. They made the tackles for 3 qtrs. The last 2 times UNC had the ball our D stopped them without allowing a 1st down to save clock. Our QB gave that game away by throwing INT after each of those stops. If a freshman QB can play so much better than our Sr. it is time to sit the Sr some and let him try to get his head on.
I watched the entire game and for me, the bottom line (pun intended) is UNC blocked on offense and tackled on defense. We did not. We allowed a freshman quarterback to drive his team 98 and 95 yards for two touchdowns. On the other hand our offense with several skilled senior players could not muster a score from good field position. I don't know how you fix that, but we need to find a way. Otherwise we are in for a long brutal season.
This is what frustrates me so much. I have dutifully given my money to the Gamecock Club, and been patient, allowing time for Coach Muschamp to build what he needed. By his own words, he said this was the most talented team he has had here. So, why then do we suck so much?
I really think our staff pushes them too much in practice during the year. They go full tilt the whole week even during the season, hell even Smoking Joe Morrison didn't do that and his practices were brutal. Not only does the team show up on Saturday tired they are beat up as hell. How many were out due to injuries Saturday, 4 to 6 Just doesn't make sense if you ask me.
