Columbia, SC - The 4th/5th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks return home to face 21st-ranked Arkansas in another critical Southeastern Conference showdown in Colonial Life Arena tonight, tipping off at 7:00 pm ET. The Razorbacks are led by high-scoring guard Chelsea Dungee, who is 3rd in the SEC in scoring at 19.7 points per game.

The Gamecocks and Dawn Staley may have had this game marked on their calendar, as the Razorbacks are the last SEC opponent to defeat South Carolina, as Arkansas outlasted South Carolina 95-89 in the Gamecocks' first SEC Tournament game last season. The Gamecocks (14-1, 2-0) are currently on an eight-game winning streak and are returning home to friendly surroundings after winning a tough road SEC victory 93-78 at Alabama, while Arkansas (13-2, 1-1) are coming in off of a 86-70 road win against Auburn.

Gamecocks played about as good a first Quarter as anyone could hope to ask of them. They lead 31-15 after 10 minutes. They hold leading Razorback scorer Chelsea Dungee to 0-8 shooting and 0 points: the Gamecocks have 3 blocks in the game and I think all 3 are Boston blocking Dungee's shots. Boston has 8 points and NINE (9) REBOUNDS!!!!! in the first Quarter, and Cooke has 10 points already.....

Arkansas steps up in the 2nd Quarter, and show why they were a top 25 ranked team coming in. The Razorbacks compete with the Gamecocks on the board, and out-score them 15-13 in the 2nd Period, but the Gamecocks still take a 44-30 lead into the halftime break. The Arky leading scorer Chelsea Dungee finally gets onto the scoreboard with two made free throws - she now has 2 pts - but is 0-11 from the field. Boston already has a career-best in rebounds with only one half of basketball played....

Mid-way through the 3rd Quarter, Boston has 14 points and 20 rebounds...

Beal has 10 boards herself at the 4-minute timeout, so its not just Aliyah that's been working the boards. The entire team is killing Arkansas on the boards.....

Gamecocks lead 74-53 through 3 quarters. Boston with 17 pts, 22 rebounds, and 4 blocks in 24 minutes. Don't know how much she'll play in the 4th qtr. Cooke leading the Gamecocks with 18 pts on 4-8 shooting from the 3-pt. line, including one right at the end of the 3rd qtr.......

We're now 16 pts shy of scoring 90+ pts for the game. If we get there, it would be all 3 SEC games to start the season, that we scored 90+ pts in. Don't know if we've ever done that before....

She has 22 rebounds ......unreal.

Gamecocks 84-68 under 5 to go in the game

Arkansas is making a run here - we've focused too hard on stopping Dungee, and not focused enough on stopping other players, and they had a player pop off three consecutive 3-ptrs to pull Arky close....

FINAL

#21/21 Arkansas 82 #4/5 South Carolina 91

Gamecocks win 91-82 over Arkansas in a game that got a lot tighter at the end than we would've wanted, lol. Still, the Gamecocks improve to 15-1 on the season, and 3-0 in SEC play, and score 90+ pts again for the 3rd time. And those 3 SEC opponents haven't been bottom-dwellers either: Alabama is solid, and Kentucky and Arkansas are among the top 5 league teams coming into this season.

Four Gamecocks score in double-digits tonight, led by the fabulous freshman Aliyah Boston, who scored 19 pts and pulled down a new career-high 25 rebounds. Boston also had 5 of the team's 7 blocks. Boston's 25 boards are three shy of the program single-game record of 28 that Demetress Adams owns - Adams also got her record against Arkansas in 2008.

Zia Cooke led the team with 21 pts and 5 rebounds, Ty Harris added 13 pts, 7 assists, and 5 boards, and Kiki Herbert-Harrigan contributed 13 pts along, 6 rebounds, and 1 block: that lone shot block was good enough to move Kiki into 3rd place all-time in program history in career blocked shots. Brea Beal also added a career-high 12 rebounds to go with 4 pts...

South Carolina has now scored 99, 93, and 91 points in their first 3 SEC games of the season. The Gamecocks have now scored 90+ pts in 3 or more SEC games for the first time since the 2002-03 season under Susan Walvius, when they scored 91 pts in a double-OT loss to UGA, 97 pts in a win vs UK, and 91 in the very next game at Ole Miss, but those were not the first 3 games of the SEC season. The 2002-03 season was led by Jocelyn Penn, who was the 5th-leading scorer in the NCAA that season at around 24 ppg. That team was Walvius' 2nd consecutive NCAAT team - she only had those 2 NCAAT seasons - and fell in the 2nd Round to Penn State...

Senior Kiki Herbert-Harrigan collected one single block tonight, but that block gave her 177 total for her career, which tied her for 3rd all-time in program history with Lakesha Tolliver (2204-07), behind Alaina Coates' 210 and A'ja Wilson's 363. If Kiki maintains her season average through the rest of the season and into the post-season, she'll have a very strong chance of catching Coates' total, which is amazing.

Senior Ty Harris dished out a game-high 7 assists tonight, which brought her career total to 592 assists, which is only 3 shy for 2nd place all-time behind Mindy Ballou's (1983-86) 595, and only 23 behind the program record 615 of Cristina Ciocan (2001-04).

All this talk of records got me thinking about how Boston could rank in total blocks by the time she graduates. I just did some math and if Boston keeps up her pace, she'll match Wilson's block record by the time she graduates in just regular season games. Literally...she has 50 blocks in 16 games, which equals 3.125 bpg. Expand that to four seasons of 29 games and that equals 362.5 blocks over a four year career in just regular season games.
