***WBB #4/5 South Carolina (15-1) vs Vanderbilt (12-4) Game Thread***

#4/5 SOUTH CAROLINA (15-1) AT VANDERBILT (12-4)
5 P.M. (ET) |  NASHVILLE, TENN.  |  MEMORIAL GYMNASIUM (14,316)

South Carolina Game Notes (PDF) | WATCH: SEC Network | LISTEN: 107.5 The Game | Live Stats | Staley Media Availability

ABOUT THIS GAME

  • South Carolina trails Vanderbilt in the overall series 16-21 but is 11-2 against the Commodores in the Dawn Staley era after winning the last 10 meetings by an average of 14.0 points.
  • The Gamecocks have won all five meetings on Vanderbilt's home court in the Staley era.
  • South Carolina looks to open SEC play 4-0 for the second-straight season and the sixth time in the last seven campaigns.

GAMECOCK NOTABLES

  • South Carolina has more wins over RPI top-50 teams (6) than any team in the country and has played more games against those teams (7) than any team in either the AP or Coaches Top 25 this week. The Gamecocks' five wins over nationally ranked opponents – including two top-15 foes – are more than any team in the country.
  • Senior Tyasha Harris and freshman Aliyah Boston were named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 this week. Boston is the lone freshman on the list, and the Gamecocks are one of five teams with multiple entries.
  • Four of the Gamecocks' starters average double-figure points in SEC play so far this season, and three Gamecocks off the bench have added at least 7.0 points per game. Just two of those five starters average more than 30.0 minutes per game – Zia Cooke and Tyasha Harris (30.3 mpg).
  • South Carolina's three 90-point SEC games matches the most such games in program history (2002-03).
  • The Gamecocks' game against #21/21 Arkansas was played at a blistering pace with each team attempting 79 field goals. South Carolina also logged 21 free throw attempts in the victory.
  • Freshman forward Aliyah Boston is averaging a double-double in SEC play with 16.7 ppg and a league-best 14.3 rpg through three games, playing just 24.7 minutes per outing. Measuring against others in the league, Boston's efficiency ranks her third in scoring a 27.0 points per 40 minutes – best among SEC freshmen. Against ranked opponents, the young forward also averages a double-double with 14.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg – both team highs.
  • Freshman guard Zia Cooke made her SEC debut with 15 points against #13/13 Kentucky and that was her league-game low. Cooke is fifth in the conference with 18.7 ppg in league play.
  • Senior Tyasha Harris has had her hands on at least one-third of the Gamecocks' offense over the last two SEC games between her scoring (13.5 ppg) and her 7.0 assists per game leading to another 17.5 ppg in that stretch.

BY THE NUMBERS
Tyasha Harris is three assists away from matching Mindy Ballou (1983-86) for No. 2 in program history in career assists.

Zia Cooke became just the fourth Gamecock freshman ever to record multiple 20-point games in SEC play – Kelsey Bone (2), Alaina Coates (2), A'ja Wilson (3).

12.6 The Gamecocks' 94.3 points per SEC game this season are 12.6 more than the second-highest average in the league (Mississippi State and Arkansas, 81.7 ppg).

29.3 The South Carolina bench has scored 29.3 points per SEC game this season, nearly 1/3 of the team's 94.3 points per game.

46.7 The Gamecocks average 46.7 points in the paint in SEC play so far with the guards adding 22.0 of those points and forwards netting 24.6.

63.2 Aliyah Boston averages 6.3 offensive rebounds per SEC game and has scored (field goal and/or free throws) on 63.2 percent of those rebounds.

I love how Boston uses her body to create space and make easy layups. She is manhandling Vandy early.

This is a game that could be concerning: Vanderbilt had been awful in the previous 2-3 seasons, but South Carolina has always struggled a bit playing in Vanderbilt's arena, due to its unique layout of team benches being at each end of the court, and the court being raised up off the floor and the crowd being set off and away from the court. Yes as Feathered posted above, the Gamecocks have won every game in Vandy's arena under Staley, but most have been struggles when it was thought they'd be blow-outs. Hopefully we don't struggle today....

Vanderbilt has been playing much better this season, and Fasoula is a legit SEC player, but they turn the ball over a bit, and are not a great 3-pt shooting team. If we can contain them in the paint, and take away from their ability to score close to the basket, we should be in good shape for this game....

Vanderbilt had gone off on a big run - I think 12-0 or something run like that - to close in on the lead, but then Coach Staley put the Gamecock starters back in, and we go on a 11-0 run of our own, to end the half. The game was 27-24 at one point, but Gamecocks take the 38-24 lead at the halftime break.....

BREAKING NEWS::

#3-ranked Oregon State is in a tight battle with Arizona State, trailing 49-46 with under a minute left to play. Arizona State has already beaten #2-ranked Oregon earlier this week, and #1-ranked Connecticut had lost to #6-ranked Baylor.

#4-ranked South Carolina is about to move up big-time in this weeks' polls.....

UPDATE: un-ranked Arizona State hands #3-ranked Oregon State their first loss of the season 55-47, to complete what must be their best week of WBB in their program history, by beating both Oregon teams. The Oregon Ducks were #2-ranked when the Sun Devils beat them earlier this week.

Along with UConn's loss to Baylor earlier this week as well, if the Gamecocks can take care of business here tonight, we may have the new #1-ranked WBB team next week.....

Gamecocks come out of the halftime lockerrroom with some renewed conviction, and jump on Vanderbilt immediately. Vandy is picking up some quick fouls to start the 2nd half. Gamecocks now lead 54-28 with 6 minutes left to play in the 3rd Period.....

So after Vanderbilt closing to 27-24 midway through the 2nd Quarter, South Carolina went on a 27-4 run since. You made them angry, Vandy.....

Gamecocks out-score Vanderbilt 36-14 to take a 74-38 lead through three quarters. I was thinking at halftime that this game was going to break USC's unprecedented 3-game streak of 90+ pts scored per game to open SEC play - I don't know if ANY SEC team has ever scored 90+ pts in each of their first 3 SEC games in a season before - but that quarter has them in strong shape to extend it to 4 games.....

Gamecocks win their 10th consecutive game and improve on the season to 16-1 and 4-0 in league play, with a convincing 93-57 road victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores (12-5, 2-2). The Gamecocks had five players with double-digits, with Zia Cooke leading the way with 17 pts, Kiki Herbert-Harrigan had 15 pts, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks, Laeticia Amihere added 11 pts, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals, Ty Harris had 10 pts, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds, and Aliyah Boston added 10 pts, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Cooke scored 14 of her points after halftime, and Amihere and Herbert-Harrigan each scored 9 pts of their points after intermission as well.....

South Carolina continues their current road tour of the SEC by traveling to Columbia, MO to bettle the Missouri Tigers next Thursday at 8:30 PM ET. Missouri (4-13, 1-3) lost today at Arkansas 90-73......
