GAMECOCK NOTABLES

 • South Carolina locked up its ninth-straight 20-win season with Thursday's victory at Ole Miss. It is the Gamecocks' quickest march to 20 wins since the 2015-16 team opened the season 22-0.
 • South Carolina has dominated the rebounding game this season, ranked third in the nation in rebounding average (47.4) and in rebounding margin (+13.3). Their effort on the offensive glass – first in the nation in offensive rebounding rate (.452) – with the Gamecocks averaging 17.0 second-chance points on the season, including 18.2 in SEC games.
 • After a tough outing against #9/9 Mississippi State, the Gamecock bench has thrived in the last two outings, averaging 41.0 points per game on 57.6 percent shooting. Three of the eight double-digit scorers in those games came off the bench. Sophomore Destanni Henderson led the charge with her 11.5 points per game as much as her 4.5 assists per outing in that stretch.
 • Senior point guard Tyasha Harris, who is on every national player of the year watch list, is the only Gamecock to score in double figures in every SEC game this season (13.0 ppg) while handing out 5.5 assists per SEC game. Over the last five games, she led the team with 13.4 points and 5.4 assists per game. During that stretch, she shot 47.2 percent from the field, including 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from 3-point range.
 • Freshman Aliyah Boston is one of four league players averaging a double-double in SEC action this season, joining a senior and two juniors in the standing. She is the only one of the four also ranked in blocks per league game.
 • Thursday's leading scorer, Laeticia Amihere (16 pts) will miss today's game as she works toward making the Canadian National Team for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgium, which runs Feb. 6-9.
BY THE NUMBERS

4 South Carolinas four wins over RPI top-25 teams leads the country, as does its seven wins vs. top-50 RPI teams.

10.4 The Gamecocks have allowed just 10.4 points per first quarter in SEC games this season, including five games of single-digit first quarters.

28.2 Between her scoring and points scored off her assists, Tyasha Harris has her hands on 28.2 percent (23.7 ppg) of the Gamecocks' scoring.

29.5 South Carolina's list of offensive weapons goes beyond the starting lineup as the bench averages 29.5 points per SEC game – 33.2 percent of the offense.

44.5 Carolina averages 44.5 points in the paint in SEC games – 21.0 by the guards and 23.5 by the forwards.

60.3 Aliyah Boston has immediately scored (field goal or free throw) on 60.3 percent of her offensive rebounds in SEC games.

The Vols players except one are over 6 feet tall. Their player Davis is third leading scorer in the SEC.  Like UK, Queen Bea needs to be all over her as she is always our  X factor.  If we neutralize Houston & Burrell (3 point shooter) while rebounding the hell out of them we should get the dub!  Note LA will not be available due to Canada team commitment, so we need to keep our fouls in check to keep height in the game; mainly Boston, Kiki, LeLe, & Victaria.  Keep turnovers low & need a senior explosive game from Ty & off the bench spark from Destanni.  GO COCKS!

8-4 Gamecocks midway through the 1st Quarter, and only 1 foul called thus far (on UTjr.), which is surprising, as physical this was expected to be with all the bigs in the paint. Tennessee already with 4 turnovers, while USC with none thus far. Please hope I don't jinx them!!

Gamecocks looking strong lead 21-9 after one quarter, on a buzzer-beating jump-shot from Henderson. Tennessee has 6 turnovers to none for South Carolina, and the Gamecocks have out-rebounded the Lady Vols 13-12. Still only that one foul on Tennessee. Zia Cooke lead the Gamecocks with 9 1st-Quarter points!!

Gamecocks lead 24-13 just under 5 minutes left to play in the 1st half. Gamecocks now with 3 turnovers, but UTjr. have 9 thus far. Gamecocks now have 1 foul on Saxton, but UTjr. have 3 fouls (still very few fouls called for a typical SEC game). Gamecock's ball after the timeout.....

Gamecocks lead the Lady Vols 38-23 at the end of the first half. Freshman Zia Cooke exploded for 14 first half points. Gamecocks picked up 4 fouls in the 2nd Period, with two of them by Victaria Saxton, and lead 4-3 in the game. Tennessee committed 11 turnovers in the 1st half. BLocks are tied 7-7 for both teams, with USC owning the steals 6-0. Gamecocks are also the dominant team in fast-break points - which is not surprising considering UTjr.'s size - 14-2, but also dominated in points in the paint 20-6, which mean we are the more active and balanced team....

Lets keep it up in the 2nd half! We are in strong position here.....

Boston is limping now.....NOT GOOD. She goes back to the lockerroom, and with Amihere not here as she's back with her Canadian National Team, we are thin in post depth. PLEASE PLEASE let Aliyah be OK......

Through three periods, Gamecocks reclaim the 20-point lead to 56-36 over Tennessee. Starting post and freshman Aliyah Boston came up gimpy midway through the 3rd Period, and left immediately to the Gamecocks lockerroom. She hasn't returned to the game, but the Gamecocks went off on a 9-0 run to close out the Quarter. The Lady Vols had closed to within 9 points early in the 3rd.

Boston has come out for the 2nd half!! She's still in uniform, and not using crutches. That's some good news, anyways. Lets get at them, Gamecocks!!

Gamecocks hanging in there, leading 64-43 over Tennessee midway through the final Quarter in the game. Boston hasn't returned to the game since coming out with a limp. She may not return even if she's capable, if we're able to maintain the 20 point lead the rest of the way. Tamari Key has 4 fouls for the Vols.....

One could say, "face guard Rennia Davis, because she's the only offense Tennessee has", but 1) South Carolina doesn't have the length depth to face-guard Davis, With Amihere in Canada, Boston injured, and Herbert-Harrigan in foul trouble, and 2) just let Davis score her points: she isn't totally beasting, and the rest of the Lady Vols are struggling big time to score.

Tamari Key just fouled out!! She was a HUGE obstacle to the Gamecocks, with 9 blocked shots!!! She only had 1 point, but that's a HUGE help against the size-disadvantaged Gamecocks......

The #1st-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks remain undefeated in SEC play with a hard-fought  69-48  victory over the #22nd-ranked Lady Vols of Tennessee!. Freshman Zia Cooke led the way with 20 points. Destanni Henderson added 12 points, and Aliyah Boston chipped in 10 points 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals before leaving the game.

The Gamecocks improve to 21-1 with their 15th consecutive win on the season, and as stated above remain unblemished on their SEC record at 9-0. Tennessee falls to 17-5, 7-2. The Gamecocks next take to the road again to Arkansas this Thursday, tip-off at 8:30 PM. The Gamecocks previous defeated the #25th-ranked Razorbacks 91-82 in Colonial Life Arena....

Hopefully the Gamecocks do not pay a heavy price for their win today. Aliyah Boston left the game midway through the 3rd Quarter, with a limp. She returned to the bench after the 2nd half, and didn't play the rest of the way, but but thankfully she wasn't needed. They will do the formal evaluation plus MRI tomorrow, but as Coach Boyer stated after the game on the radio broadcast, Boston seemed to be in high spirits, which is very encouraging at this early stage.

Arkansas is a decent rebounding team, but not at the level of the Gamecocks typically, and they are definitely a perimeter-shooting and 3-pt-shooting offense. The last game we might remember was the one where Boston pulled down 25 rebounds, and the Gamecocks out-rebounded Arkansas overall 63-33. Now, saying that we don't need 25 rebounds for ANY opponents is just getting too ridiculous, but it appears that if we need to give Boston a rest, and play Arkansas without her, it shouldn't be too big of an adverse impact IMO. That will be a game that is more dependent on perimeter defense than post defense. But we'll know more tomorrow after Aliyah's evaluation....

Still need to wait for tomorrow to get the official medical word on Boston's injury, but this seems pretty encouraging to me:

Just the fact that it is more to Aliyah's foot/ankle, and not in the area of the knee, is encouraging to me. I also felt that had the game in the 4th Qtr. been closer, then Boston might have come back into the game, but we managed to maintain around a 20-point cushion for most of the period, and then Tamari Key - the big girl that Boston played against when she was in the game - got into foul trouble and ultimately fouled out herself, so it made sense to hold Boston out and let her call it a night....
