  • This is the fourth time South Carolina has earned the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament (2014-2017).
  • Under head coach Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks are 6-2 in SEC Tournament quarterfinals.
  • South Carolina is 3-2 in the SEC Tournament games played in Greenville with all three wins coming en route to the 2017 tournament title.
GAMECOCK NOTABLES

  • South Carolina has posted two of the four 16-0 SEC seasons in league history – 2016, 2020.
  • The 2020 SEC Regular-Season Championship is the Gamecocks' fifth in the last seven seasons and second in the four-year careers of seniors Tyasha Harris and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan.
  • The 2020 SEC coaches' awards were littered with Gamecocks, headlined by Aliyah Boston as the Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year and Dawn Staley as the SEC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her 12-year career at South Carolina. Boston and Tyasha Harris were on the All-SEC First Team, and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan picked up All-SEC Second-Team recognition. Zia Cooke joined Boston on the All-Freshman Team.
  • Starting three freshmen throughout the season, South Carolina has dominated the 10th-toughest schedule in the country,  recording more wins over top-50 RPI teams (14) and top-25 RPI opponents (8) than any other team. The Gamecocks' 11 wins over AP Top-25 opponents leads the nation by two and includes four wins over top-10 teams.
  • The SEC's top defensive team, allowing just 55.7 points per game overall (19th in the nation) and 58.3 points per SEC game, had just one entry on the SEC All-Defensive Team in Aliyah Boston. The Gamecocks have held their opponent under 60 points 21 times this season, including 10 SEC games and six games against nationally ranked opponents.
  • The last five games have seen the most veteran Gamecocks surging with Mikiah Herbert Harrigan leading the team with 13.8 points per game on 51.1 percent shooting and 2.0 blocks per game in that stretch. Tyasha Harris moves up to third in scoring over the last five wins at 11.4 points per game while averaging 6.2 assists. Junior LeLe Grissett has surged off the bench as well, adding 8.4 points per game on 73.9 percent (17-of-23) shooting.
  • The three Naismith award semifinalists were announced this week, all with South Carolina entries. Aliyah Boston and Tyasha Harris are among the 10 semifinalists for the Naismith Trophy. Boston is on the Defensive Player of the Year list, and Staley is in the running for Coach of the year.
  • Freshman Aliyah Boston has put together one of the best freshman seasons in Gamecock history, closely mirroring the immediate impact of Alaina Coates. Boston joined Coates as the only SEC Freshman of the Year winners in league history to also earn another of the league's highest individual honors as she added Defensive Player of the Year honors. Boston has broken Coates' South Carolina freshman records for blocked shots (79), double-doubles (12) and double-doubles vs. SEC (7) in a season and claimed Aleighsa Welch's freshman season offensive rebounds record (109). She is out-scoring Coates (12.9-12.3) on better shooting (.614-.612) and averages more rebounds (10.2-8.5) and blocked shots (2.3-2.3).

Ladies, I am sure coach & staff have scouted well in preparing you for this next challenge.  Focus only on this game & respect Georgia as you would UCONN; this is the tournament where anyone can bring their A game on any given day.  Transition the ball w/efficiency, play tough D, & take good care of the basketball.  You got this; GO COCKS!

UGA is playing the Gamecocks tight in this one - game was tied up 15-all late in the 1st Quarter, but Gamecocks went off on a 7-0 run to close the period out, and after 10 minutes lead 23-15. UGA's Center Jenna Staiti has 11 of their 15 points.....

Gamecocks lead 45-31 at the halftime of their game with UGA. Aliyah Boston leads the way with 9 pts and 5 rebounds, Kiki Herbert-Harrigan has 8 pts in 12 minutes, and Brea Beal had a strong 1st half with 7 pts and 5 boards. Ty Harris also has 7 pts and 3 assists, although she's been a little careless with 4 turnovers. Georgia's 6-4 Center Jenna Staiti led the way for the Bulldogs with 14 points including 2 3-pt shots, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.....

Gamecocks extend their lead in the 3rd Qtr. and lead UGA 67-45 with 10 minutes left to play in the game. seniors Harris and Herbert-Harrigan came on strong in the 3rd to lead the team with 15 and 16 pts respectively. Boston has 9 pts and 10 rebounds - she didn't score any points but pulled down 5 boards in the 3rd period, and also now has 4 blocks and 2 steals. Staiti for UGA went scoreless in the 3rd qtr.....

#1 Seed and top-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks defeat #9 Seed UGA 89-56 to advance to the Semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. The Gamecocks enjoyed balanced production from the entire team, as senior starters Kiki Herbert-Harrigan and Ty Harris led the way. Herbert-Harrigan set the tempo by scoring a team-high 16 points with 2 rebounds, a block and a steal, and Harris scored 15 pts, adding 5 assists and 2 steals. Freshman Aliyah Boston also contributed 9 pts, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 steals.

The reserves helped keep the minutes down for the starters so they'll remain fresh for the rest of the tournament with a possible 2 more games to play in the next 2 days. Lele Grissett shot 6-6 from the field and scored 12 pts along with 4 steals and a block, Victaria Saxton shot 5-6 and scored 11 pts with 4 rebuonds, 3 blocks and 2 steals, Destanni Henderson scored 10 pts on 5-10 shooting with 7 assists and 4 boards, and Laeticia Amihere added 7 pts with 7 rebounds, 3 blocks 2 assists and a steal.

The Gamecocks now wait for the winner between the game up next as #4 Seed Texas A&M takes on #5 Seed Arkansas in Game 8, beginning at 2:30 PM. Go Gamecocks!!!

They will play Arkansas who won two in a row in the tourney but also means they have played two in a row. Tomorrow will be their third in three days.

Arkansas just did pull that one out and should be getting tired some. Our girls are very rested and did not have to play many minutes today either. Ark. did play a strong 4th against us in the first match this season, but never really looked like they would make up all the points. We only beat them by 9 that game but had no problem holding that lead, Gonna be another great game to watch.

Dawn has been purposely splitting playing time for a while now during the regular season.

This is also what Dabo has been doing at Clemson the last two seasons.  Just reload.

We got us a Natty-level system here now.

I haven't watched this game but the stats make me feel like Zia is in a slump. She has struggled with her shot the past few games and it looks like that trend has continued...

Zia only took 2 shot attempts today. She has a tendency to shoot a lot whether her game is on or off, but today I think it had more to do with foul trouble than anything. Still, she did look to be off her game today - against Florida she was 5-8 for 11 pts. Cooke could be in a mini-slump, I hope not. The matchup against Arkansas favors us because they are more of a perimeter offensive team where interior play, points in the paint, and rebounding are not their better aspects. Cooke is more of a slasher-type PG who can also hit the three, but IMO her game thrives when she can drive to the basket, and she should be able to do that against Arkansas. In both of our regular-season games against them she didn't shoot at a high rate - around 35% to about 40% - but she still scored points. Boston rebounded like a fool against them.

Their biggest weapons will be Tolefree and Dungee hitting their perimeter shots. Hopefully our own guards will be able to contain them as we have for most of both games we've played: in the 1st game, we got sloppy in a game we were winning by 20 or so, and let Tolefree hit 3-4 3-pt. shots in the 4th Qtr., and turn a 20-pt route into a 9-10 pt win. We won the 2nd game at Arkansas by 20+ pts, and Tolefree didn't have a strong game. Hopefully we have another game like that one, but really both games were decisive wins with the exception of letting Tolefree get loose in the 1st one.....
