USC Defensive Coordinator Lorenzo Ward got the nickname “Whammy” as a player at Alabama in the mid-80′s because of his hard-hitting nature. His defense has exemplified that same aggressiveness thus far in 2012, on their way to ranking 5th in the country in pts allowed. The Gamecock defense is giving up a meager 12.3 points per game.
To hear Ward tell it on a weekly basis, his defensive philosophy is about as simple as it comes: His unit is going to line-up across from the opposing offense and see what happens. Ward has an unshakable confidence in his guys ability.

Last week against LSU the Gamecock D was tested, though. Although still only giving up 23 points, they also gave up a season-high 258 rushing yards.
Now the Gamecocks head down to Florida banged up on the interior of the defensive line, and are facing a number 3 nationally ranked Florida Gators team that runs the ball 70% of the time, and ranks in the top 15 nationally in rushing offense.
