What Gamecocks fans need to know about The Opening

March 24, 2018

On Sunday, The Opening will make its annual stop at Buford High School in the Atlanta area, and several South Carolina recruiting targets will be on hand.

Here’s what Gamecocks fans need to know before the camp begins.

South Carolina recruiting additions

Two of South Carolina’s 2019 commitments are set to compete at the camp: 3-star defensive end Rodricus Fitten and 3-star tight end Keshawn Toney.

Fitten (Atlanta-Washington) is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 25 weakside defensive end in the Class of 2019. Toney (Williston, S.C.) checks in as the 25th-best tight end in the country.

Young backs

The only 2019 quarterback with a South Carolina offer at the camp will be 4-star Sam Howell, though contact with the Gamecocks fell off after Kurt Roper was replaced by Dan Werner as quarterbacks coach.

Four-star Max Johnson, a pro-style passer from Watkinsville, Ga., is one of four Class of 2020 quarterbacks with an offer from South Carolina. Aaron McLaughlin, who’s from Buford, Ga., is the only 2021 quarterback who claims an offer from the Gamecocks.

Several of the 2019 and 2020 running backs with a South Carolina offer will be there, too.

2020

  • 4-star Jo’Quavious Marks (Atlanta)
  • 4-star Cartavious Bigsby (Hogansville, Ga.)
  • Jordon Simmons (Powder Springs, Ga.)
  • Deondre Jackson (Stone Mountain, Ga.)
2019

  • 4-star Derrian Brown (Buford, Ga.)
  • 3-star Tahj Gary (Atlanta)
  • 3-star Paris Brown Jr. (Powder Springs, Ga.)
  • 3-star Jamious Griffin (Rome, Ga.)

The junior defenders from Georgia

It’s probably unrealistic to think South Carolina will sign all the names below. To be honest, there’s one or two players on the list who probably aren’t considering South Carolina all that seriously.

But plenty of them are. Imagine a Gamecocks defense featuring this group of prospects from Georgia:

  • 4-star DE Curtis Fann (Riverdale, Ga.)
  • 4-star DE Dante Walker (Riverdale, Ga.)
  • 4-star DT Jaelin Humphries (Lawrenceville, Ga.)
  • 4-star Travon Walker (Thomaston, Ga.)
  • 4-star LB Kalen Deloach (Savannah, Ga.)
  • 3-star LB Jamie Pettway (Albany, Ga.)
  • 3-star Tyron Hopper (Roswell, Ga.)
  • 4-star S Jaylen McCollough (Powder Springs, Ga.)
  • 4-star ATH Jammie Robinson
  • 4-star CB Warren Burrell (Suwanee, Ga.)
  • 2020 CB Jalen Huff (Buford, Ga.)
While there’s serious competition for everyone listed above, if South Carolina is able to land about half of those prospects, say Fann, Humphries, Deloach, McCollough and Robinson, then the Gamecocks 2018 class will be really good.
