What is "success?"

One of the questions I tossed to you fine folks before the season started was what you would consider a successful season; some of you tossed out a number of wins, others just wanted to see improvement to know we had reached rock bottom and were on the way up instead of continuing the way down.

The more I thought about it, the more it distilled down to three points to me; two of them are boxes we can check now with one more still on the board:

  • Show improvement. We were a two-win team last year. Can we show we are better than that? We're at 5 wins, so this can answered as a yes.
  • Can we get a signature win? Hope was fading for this one this year, to be honest. even our wins were tough to look at ... until last week. Now the entire landscape of recruiting and season goals has changed, and we are literally the talk of the SEC.
  • Get to a bowl. It's right there, in front of us.

Thoughts? How are you measuring the season?

I look at this season as one of cautious optimism...while the Florida game was nice and a surprise I am curious to see how we match up against Missouri as I hope we see the team that beat florida as opposed to the team that squeaked by ECU and Vandy

One thing this season makes me realize is how bad of a coach Muschamp was at the end of his tenure...no excuse for what he did and absolutely no excuse for the contract that Tanner gave him and then bought out

1 step forward with the big win over the Gators. Now can we maintain the one step at a time by winning Saturday. Muschamp would have a signature  win then follow up with  2 steps backwards. Just keep going forward and be very pleased.

I don't really have a quantifiable set of expectations. I think that as long as we're seeing smart plays and the team is not getting blown off the field, then that's good enough. If I had to put a number on it, I would say 5 wins. That gives us Eastern Illinois, East Carolina, Troy, Vandy, and then one other from the rest on the schedule.

That is what I said prior to the season starting, and so far we've done about what I expected as far as wins goes. There is still work to do though. Hopefully the UF game was a sign of things to come and not just a fluke. We should know which it is by the end of the season. There is still work to do, but I think we're better now than we were last year. So I would say that is about as much success as a fan should reasonably hope for given the recent past.

Success is not making Gamecocks want to throw stuff at their TVs on Saturdays.

I think this sums up my feelings pretty well. But I want another signature win. Against the taters.

If the team that showed up against Florida shows up against Clemson, I think we can.  I think we'll have issues with their D line, but should have success if we can get to their QB.  I expected about 4 wins this season so in that aspect we've exceeded my expectations.  We got rid of some "ME" players from last year and have team players it seems now.  I've been disappointed with the offense but they showed improvement last week.  Hopefully it wasn't a one game wonder.  I don't fault Satterfield as much as others since we've had issues with a healthy QB and played Zeb some too.  Teams were able to load the box taking away our potential to run and now Brown gives us a passing game threat to open up the run game.  Doty looked good in the first quarter against Vandy and it probably would've been a blowout if he hadn't injured his foot in the second quarter.  Could be wrong, that's just my thoughts.

Funny enough, a couple of those players wasted no time celebrating the win over UF on Twitter as if they never trashed the entire university on their way out the door.

Hey, the jury is still out on this team  I mean I said they would get to 6 wins but you need to act like you've been there before, I really didn't like the coaching staff how they kept talking about the Florida win in mid week , Put that one behind you next up Missouri if hey loose Saturday it's all for nothing no reason to go there and get beat,    Hopefully the mind  set is whip Missouri's ass  and get home  again o.k. it was an good win hey but please move on I just hope we're not sleep walking come Saturday.    EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT AN BOWL FORGET THAT THE TASK AT HAND IS WIN ALWAYS HAS BEEN BUT FOR SOME REASON WE GET 5 WINS AND EVERYONE IS MAKING PLANS.  LET'S GO COCK'T BEAT MISSOURI GO KNOCK ON THE DRESSING ROOM DOOR AND ASK THEM TO COME ON OUT, LET'S GO WIN THIS THING.

"Thoughts? How are you measuring the season? " - with a yardstick (some Caddyshack play on words there).

Seriously, by improving.  I think we finally took a good step forward against UF -even if they are a mess.  They still have more talent than us and we whipped them.  If this game was 2-3 games ago, I think we lose.  Maybe that bye week really helped this team.  From here on out, keep the offense playing well.  Get the next win @ Mizzou.  I hope we end the season strong and some of the dreadful penalties and offensive play fade away from my memory.

I don't think anybody has said this team has arrived and the world is their oyster, and I haven't heard any of the coaches indicate that this weekend would be anything but an absolute dogfight. I don't care how it happens, I will be happy with the ugliest win of all time - but WE ARE FANS DUDE - ARE WE NOT SUPPOSED TO GET EXCITED ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO POTENTIALLY GO TO A BOWL?

My expectation was 5 wins, and I think most on here was the same. We got those 5 wins. Now, is that "success"?

Success can be different things based on the state of the program, which is never static and un-moving. What could be considered moderate "success" some years could be excellent "success" other years, and even mediocrity or a down-trend for still others. Based on where the program was over the past number of seasons, I really wasn't going out on that limb looking for "success". I was more looking for a solid foothold back towards a positive direction that one day could lead us back to "success".

5 wins this season is a solid start. I - like most others here who responded to the other thread - were looking for intelligent everything: intelligent player development and positioning, intelligent play-calling in games, intelligent player execution and conduct during games. Smart football. A definite improvement from Muschamp Mode.

Can't really say that we've seen a lot of that this season, with a possible exception of last week's game. But we did get those 5 wins.

We're in a strong position to grab us another win from the last three games of the schedule. Best bet is this coming Saturday. Hate to talk about it before the fact, but bowl eligibility this season would be "success". I guess success to me is setting expectations that are pleasing to me, and then seeing those expectations met or exceeded. That is "success" in my mind. Expecting 5 wins does not quite fall into this category for me, as 5 wins is an expectation that is not really "pleasing" to me, but is what I settled for based on our season's schedule of opponents, and with good grasp of the current reality of where our football program is. It's better than where we were last season - is a step forward for the better - but based on where the program is right now, it's about all that we can fairly expect. That sounds as "pleasing" as the prospect of kissing one's sister does.

Getting the opportunity to prepare and play in a bowl game - getting those players an extra 2 weeks of practice with our new coaching staff - is stealing steps forward that normally we'd not get. It's sort of jumping ahead of the curve. That IS pleasing to me. I hope I didn't jinx anything......

It’s all subjective. The W against UF could look not as good if UF tanks the rest of the year. That being said I think a bowl game would be a success for this year which just requires being .500

see I told you no one listens just happy to be average at Carolina

Maybe we can have another one game wonder out of one of the final two games.  Definitely not the follow up we hoped for.  A win would've went a long way in filling up the stadium this week.
