Major OL target likes Wolford
Four-star offensive guard Keiondre Jones is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 4 offensive guard in the Class of 2019. His already impressive offer sheet includes Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State.
Earlier this spring, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound prospect was on campus at South Carolina for a visit with coach Will Muschamp and offensive line coach Eric Wolford.
“I had a good time talking to the coaches. Me and coach Wolf had a long talk up there, so it was really good,” Jones said.
The Gamecocks offensive line coach made a good first impression on Jones, who’s from Callaway High School in Hogansville, Ga.
“He’s a really good coach. He’s an NFL-type guy. He wants me to come back,” Jones said.
Time will tell if the Gamecocks score a return visit.
“I like — first of all, they’re starting a new facility up there. That’s really nice,” Jones said. “They’re going to recruit good players in the SEC, so that’s going to stand out to anybody.”
Position versatility
Jonathan Gipson said Muschamp likes him at just about every defensive back position: cornerback, safety and nickel. The 2018 prospect from Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Ga., is rated by the 247Sports composite as a 3-star and he’s ranked as the No. 55 cornerback in the country.
In March, Gipson told SEC Country that Muschamp is a big fan. The interest is mutual.
“I like the culture. I like that they’re a family,” Gipson said. “I like that they have a degree for me. I like how they graduate all their athletes and get them to the next level. I like that.”
Gipson, who last visited South Carolina for the February junior day, is aiming to make a decision on his birthday, July 8.
“I’m just really trying to find who’s the right fit for me and who’s going to protect if football was to fall out of my life tomorrow,” he said. “Who’s going to be there for me?”
Early offer, early interest
Warren Burrell landed his offer from South Carolina in February, when South Carolina linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler reached out to the 2019 cornerback. The Gamecocks also offered Burrell’s teammate, fellow 2019 cornerback D.J. Turner.
Burrell (5-11, 170) scored his first offer from Wake Forest last fall. He’s already been to Winston-Salem, N.C., and he hopes to see Columbia, S.C., while on spring break from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Ga.
Duke, North Carolina, Michigan and Penn State are also in contact.
