What the South Carolina-Clemson game could mean for recruiting
November 21, 2017
There’s no doubt, a win against Clemson would in some way help South Carolina’s football recruiting.
It’s a big game any time. Bigger now that the Tigers won a title last year and are in the playoff discussion. An upset would break South Carolina’s current three-game slide in the series, give the Gamecocks a nine-win campaign and stand as the biggest win under the current regime.
Seems like enough to impress a recruit, but USC coach Will Muschamp wanted to focus on the wider picture, rather than the result of one Saturday night.
“It continues to show progress within our program,” Muschamp said. “Again, I’ve said it many times, one game’s not going to make a decision for a young man, and if it does, we probably don’t want him.”
Toward the end of last season, there was buzz a strong 2018 class could potentially be a stepping stone to revitalizing the Gamecocks roster. The Tigers national championship complicated that picture.
The Tigers won the battle for top overall recruit Xavier Thomas, now at IMG Academy, and defensive tackle Josh Belk, who is currently ranked No. 4 in the state by 247. Clemson came in with a late offer to linebacker Channing Tindall, the No. 2 prospect in the Palmetto State, but his choice is believed to be between Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.
Clemson has always been a formidable recruiting presence, especially under the current staff, and any ground USC could make up would probably aid the Gamecocks staff.
USC’s current class is ranked 27th in the national composite, with potentially five or so more spots to fill.
