What to watch in SC Pro-Am as Frank Martin’s ‘most talented team’ debuts

July 20, 2019

Frank Martin’s bold statement of the offseason has now been repeated.

The South Carolina basketball coach told NCAA.com’s Andy Katz last week that his next Gamecocks bunch is “the most talented team we’ve had since I’ve been here.” It echoed what he told local media members during a June 19 news conference at Colonial Life Arena.

“I think we have a lot of talented pieces,” Martin said then. “I think top to bottom, one through 14, 15, if you include the walk-ons, it’s as talented a team as I’ve been a part of. As people, work ethic, talent level, experience, when you put it all together.” (VIEW ARTICLE) THE STATE

My observations with Day 1:

I know the Pro-Am is more of a free-form pick-up game with more wide open offense and less hard-nosed defense, but I liked how all the Gamecocks that played scored pretty well. Couisnard with the 40 pts was especially impressive - he had to have some pent-up anger in those points, having to sit out last year and this being the first time he could let loose.

Kotsar with the 6 pts was the lowest point-output by far, but the 17 rebounds made up for it: it was almost like someone told him to focus hard on rebounding for this Pro-Am - I know rebounding has been the biggest thing that has gotten Maik in Coach Martin's doghouse over the years, and if he can improve on rebounding for his final year this season, that would make his senior year a great finish.

I didn't see anything for Lawson, so perhaps he wasn't able to play today. Minaya isn't a part of this Pro-Am, and neither is transfer Henry. Perhaps in Justin's case, he's still re-habbing from his knee surgery, but I thought he was 100% back in spring.

Other than Kotsar's 17 boards, Leveque had 14 rebounds, Frink had 12, McCreary had 12, and Anderson had 9 boards as well. Keep up the rebounding guys - a Gamecock team that plays strong defense and rebounds, will always have Coach Martin dancing in the coach's box....

If Kotsar can average 6 pts/17 reb for the season, it's going to be an outstanding year for the Gamecocks.

I know we're all obsessed with talking football, but I honestly cannot wait for basketball this year.  This team is going to shock a lot of people I believe!

I think this team has a real chance of making some noise this year. If we can rebound we should light some teams up.

Feels like this year could be a fruitful year.

The 2nd day/round of games started tonight for the 6 teams - 3 games on the docket for tonight. The first game has concluded:

Woah!! Couisnard hits for 47 pts!! That's 2 games out of 2 that's he's scored 40+ points. He's definitely setting that bar pretty high for himself - he's gonna have a 25-pt game, and we're all going to be, "what's wrong with Jermaine??" LOL. And the thing is, it's not like they are letting him take 30 shot attempts a game - he took 24 shots here, but he made 18 of them! He was 6 for 11 from the three.

McCreary was also lights-out tonight: 12 for 13 for 24 points! There may need to ratchet up the defense a little bit here. TJ Moss didn't shoot so well tonight, going 4 for 17, but 13 of those attempts were from the arc., and all 4 of his makes were from there. Still was 31% from behind the arc - not that great at all, but I've seen worse....

Here is Game 2 for tonight:

Trae Hannibal had a strong night: 11 for 16, 24 pts, 5 assists, 1 reb. Wildens Leveque, who really impressed folks in Day 1, had another strong night, albeit on a more conservative level: he was 6 for 7, for 12 pts, and 4 rebounds. Seventh Woods was 9 for 15, 3 for 7 behind the arc, for 23 pts, and Jair Bolden was 3 of 8 from the field, 3 of 7 behind the arc, for 9 pts...

While I am excited for the high scoring of Gamecock players, I also realize that this is an NBA all-star game kind of format with no real defense being played.

Nevertheless, I don't remember a single one of our players ever going for 40 on consecutive games, so that's really exciting to imagine possibilities there.

Championship Game Results:

Maik Kotsar: 10-14, 20 pts, 12 reb, 4 ast
Trae Hannibal: 13-21, 0-1 3-pt, 2-5 FT, 28 pts, 5 reb, 1 ast
Wildens Leveque: 6-7, 1-1 3-pt, 0-2 FT, 13 pts, 3 reb, 2 blk

PJ Dozier: 5-12, 2-4 3-pt, 4-5 FT, 16 pts, 8 reb, 8 ast, 1 blk

Chick-Fil-A Two Notch Rd. (Jermaine Couisnard, Trae Hannibal, PJ Dozier) beat Hood Construction for the championship. Couisnard as posted above did not play today - he reportedly hurt his ankle in the previous Pro-Am game which saw his 40+ pt score streak end. The injury doesn't appear too serious, but I am concerned for any injuries our MBB players sustain. Hopefully Jermaine will be able to start the season 100%.....

Despite the way the Pro-Am games are played, I’m REALLY happy to see the numbers for Leveque.  I hope that is portend of great things for him as a Gamecock!
