2018 Crystal Ball evaluations

It’s time to knock the dust off SpursUp Surveillance’s 247Sports Crystal Ball evaluations — it’s our first edition of the new year … welcome back, there’s plenty to discuss.

You’ll find a number of prospects on South Carolina’s 2018 page, but none with a South Carolina logo next to their name, until a selection for 4-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) pops up from Dec. 30. That pick, which came from Dwayne McLemore of The State, is spot-on, according to SpursUp Surveillance’s reading.

More recently, there have been several picks for 4-star defensive lineman Dennis Briggs (Kissimmee, Fla.) to Miami. South Carolina is in the mix for an official visit, following a trip to “The U” this weekend. Florida State and Louisville are also on the docket. At this point, there is no SpursUp Surveillance reading, aside from the observation that things are heavily trending toward the Hurricanes.

2019 Crystal Ball evaluations

Since Dec. 1, there have been a number of South Carolina selections for prospects from the Class of 2019, including 5-star running back Quavaris Crouch (Charlotte, N.C.), 4-star defensive end Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.), 3-star running back Michel Dukes (Charleston, S.C.) and 3-star running back Jamious Griffin (Rome, Ga.).

SpursUp Surveillance would advise that fans of any school temper their excitement with picks this far in advance. However, the Gamecocks are in strong position for all three running backs.

Crouch’s decision could ultimately dictate where the Gamecocks head for their running back take in 2019, assuming there’s just one.

Like Crouch, Pickens is seriously considering South Carolina, but he’s right around the way from Clemson and Georgia isn’t all that far away either. If both push, the Gamecocks could have a serious battle on their hands.

Three-star quarterback Garrett Shrader (Charlotte, N.C.) landed a pair of picks for Mississippi State. As odd as the pick might seem on the surface, Shrader recently told SEC Country that he wanted to see the Bulldogs before taking the next step in his recruitment. Plus, the Bulldogs’ new coach, Joe Moorhead, recruited Shrader while he was on staff at Penn State.

Four-star quarterback Sam Howell (Monroe, N.C.) was recently offered by Clemson and the Tigers have since landed a Crystal Ball pick.

Strong South Carolina recruiting effort

Four-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge wanted to go until the absolute last minute to reach his college decision. With less than a month before National Signing Day, the No. 10 defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 is nearing that conclusion.

“I think South Carolina continues to do a great job recruiting him,” Concord (N.C.) High School coach Glen Padgett recently told Phil Kornblut.

“He’s very familiar with [running backs] coach [bobby] Bentley and [defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson], and Coach Muschamp has done a great job of staying in touch with him.”

North Carolina will host him for an official visit next weekend. South Carolina is up the following weekend. Georgia, the final school in his top 3, has yet to schedule a return trip.

The Gamecocks are heavily favored to sign Sandidge, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

“They are a young team and he really likes what he sees with what they are doing on defense and where they are heading,” Padgett said. “South Carolina continues to do a great job recruiting him. Of the three, South Carolina has been recruiting him the longest and has done an outstanding job with him.”
