Who’s left for South Carolina football to target for its 2017 signing class?
July 07, 2016
South Carolina has a majority of its 2017 signing class already in place. A number of sought-after recruits are still up for grabs, including the highest-ranked prospect in the state.
With 3-star QB Jay Urich and 3-star TE Will Register already on board, the Gamecocks are probably finished at each of the two positions. Spots are up for grabs at nearly every other position group.
The Smith sweep
With Shawn and Shi Smith already on South Carolina’s board as 2017 commitments, landing 4-star ATH OrTre Smith (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) would complete the sweep.
Since the two commitments are under 6-foot, the Gamecocks are intent on landing more, bigger targets. OrTre, the No. 1 in-state prospect, is listed at 6-foot-3.5, 217 pounds. There’s also Justin Marshall, the 6-foot-1.5, 185-pound prospect from Covington, Ga. Both Marshall and OrTre Smith were on campus last month during camp time.
Rebuilding for T-Rob
A fresh batch of bodies for Travaris Robinson’s secondary is one of the key ingredients for South Carolina’s 2017 class. In June, the Gamecocks received commitments from a pair of 3-star cornerbacks — Tavyn Jackson and Damarri Mathis — along with 3-star safety Jaylin Dickerson. But they’re not done. Zay Brown, a 3-star safety from Athens, Ga., could make his commitment official later this month at the SpursUp Cookout.
There are several other highly-rated targets still considering the Gamecocks, including 4-star CB Jamyest Williams (Loganville, Ga.), 4-star CB A.J. Terrell, 3-star CB T.J. Carter (Nashville, Tenn.), 3-star CB Ameer Speed (Jacksonville, Fla.) 4-star S Tank Robinson (Santee, S.C.), 3-star S Naytron Culpepper and 4-star OLB Hamsah Nasirildeen (Concord, N.C.), who’s being recruited to play safety. Carter, Culpepper, Nasirildeen and Robinson visited South Carolina in June.
Linemen
T.J. Moore, a 4-star from Charlotte, N.C., is considering joining his teammate from Mallard Creek High School, 3-star Eric Douglas, who committed to South Carolina earlier this spring. Another priority target is Riley Locklear, a 3-star from Huntington, W.V., who visited South Carolina in June and worked with offensive line coach Shawn Elliott at camp.
Along with Douglas, the Gamecocks have two 3-star, in-state commitments in Summie Carlay (Laurens) and Dennis Daley (Columbia), who attends Georgia Military College.
On the defensive side of the ball, South Carolina has a pair of 3-star defensive end commitments: Devonte Wyatt and Tyreek Johnson. There are a handful of targets to join them, including Matthew Butler (Garner, N.C.), Christopher Whittaker (Hollywood, Fla.) and M.J. Webb (Madison, Ga.).
