Who’s left for the Gamecocks in 2019?
June 04, 2018
We’re at that point in the 2019 recruiting cycle where it’s worth asking the question: Who’s left for South Carolina?
Heading into the weekend, two names that were once at the top of the list – 4-star defensive end Joseph Anderson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and 3-star linebacker Derek Boykins (Concord, N.C.) – both committed to the Gamecocks. There are a few more, according to SEC Country, that South Carolina fans should keep an eye on over the next 7-9 months.
We’ll start with the 5-stars and work our way down. Fortunately, for those of you who are big on counting stars, there aren’t that many 3-stars left. And those that carry that designation could eventually be elevated to 4-stars.
5-star targets
Quavaris Crouch, the No. 11-ranked overall prospect in the Class of 2019, has recently been trending toward Tennessee, but this isn’t the first time one school has appeared to be out front of the rest. As you may know, both South Carolina and Clemson have held that distinction at one point in time.
Crouch (Charlotte, N.C.) is classified as an athlete, but the Gamecocks have long recruited him as a running back. Other schools are pushing for him to play on the defensive side of the ball.
This past weekend, South Carolina hosted a pair of 5-star defensive linemen on official visits. One of whom, end Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.), is already in the fold for the Gamecocks. The other, tackle Travon Walker (Thomaston, Ga.), is still up for grabs.
Georgia has long been considered the team to beat for Walker, but South Carolina continues to be in the running. Alabama and Clemson are, too.
For Champ’s defense
If you count Rodricus Fitten (Atlanta, Ga.) as a defensive lineman – he’ll play the ‘Buck’ position, which is a hybrid between outside linebacker and defensive end – South Carolina’s 14-man commitment class has five defensive linemen committed.
Only one is strictly an interior player – Jahkeem Green (Highland C.C.), who’s ranked as the No. 1 junior college defensive tackle in the class of 2019. The rest, Anderson, Pickens and JUCO 3-star Devontae Davis are all ends, though Anderson and Pickens could also end up seeing time inside at tackle.
The Gamecocks are in play for at least two more ends, though it’s clear space is limited. Savion Jackson (Clayton, N.C.) and Curtis Fann Jr. (Twin City Ga.), both of whom are 4-stars, have South Carolina near or at the top of their respective lists. Jackson was on campus this weekend for an official visit. Fann was at Louisville.
Four-star defensive end Dante Walker (Riverdale, Ga.) and 3-star Jamie Pettway (Albany, Ga.) are set to visit later this month. Both could be considered for the ‘Buck’ position.
There are probably others on the actual recruiting board, but 4-star linebacker Kalen Deloach (Savannah, Ga.) could be the top remaining linebacker in 2019. There’s no word yet on when he’ll be back on campus.
The secondary class is far from finished. In fact, it hasn’t even gotten started.
Three-star Jammie Robinson (Cordele, Ga.) was on campus over the weekend for an official visit. Though he plans to wait until December before making a decision, South Carolina is firmly planted among the leaders. At least four more defensive backs are set to be on campus at some point over the next two weeks.
JUCO cornerback D.J. Daniel (Georgia Military) plans to make a two-day stop, beginning on Tuesday. South Carolina’s primary competitors are Kentucky and Ole Miss.
Three-star cornerback John Dixon (Tampa, Fla.) is set to visit for the first day of Muschamp Camp, which opens Tuesday. Four-star cornerback Jaydon Hill (Madison, Ala.) plans to make an extended unofficial visit, starting June 14.
Four-star safety Jaylen McCollough (Powder Springs, Ga.) is being recruited as a two-way player by the Gamecocks, running back being the other position. He’ll return to Columbia within the next couple of weeks.
Four-star cornerback Chris Steele (Bellflower, Calif.) has yet to nail down a date for his next trip to South Carolina, but he plans on following through with a second visit before announcing a commitment in July. Four-star quarterback commitment Ryan Hilinski (Orange, Calif.) might accompany him.
Filling out the offense
Offensively, there may be room for four more. With a quarterback, wide receiver, two tight ends and three offensive linemen already committed, South Carolina’s class, on that side of the ball, is close to being finished.
That number – four – is based on the assumption that the Gamecocks take one running back, another wide receiver and two more offensive linemen. Obviously, those numbers are fluid and could change between now and December or between December and February.
Crouch and McCollough are among the slew of candidates at running back. Other options include Mikey Dukes (Charleston, S.C.) and Tahj Gary (Atlanta, Ga.).
South Carolina has offered several wide receivers, but there’s some uncertainty a few days before the start of Muschamp Camp. One of the options could be former Wisconsin commitment Nolan Groulx (Cornelius, N.C.), and we’re still waiting to see who could emerge as the guy to pair with 4-star Jamario Holley (Rock Hill, S.C.).
There’s a little more clarity for the other offensive line spots. Four-star tackle Warren McClendon (Brunswick, Ga.) is one of the primary options. Three-star JUCO target Anthony Whigan (Lackawanna C.C.) took an official visit this past weekend. Three-star guard Jakai Moore (Nokesville, Va.) used his official visit earlier this spring.
