Jadeveon Clowney took SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors today for his impressive 4.5 sack game at Clemson Saturday night. He had seven total tackles against the Tigers. Clowney finished the regular season with 13 sacks, which is a USC single-season record. The previous mark was 11.
Clowney managed set the record despite missing a full game against Wofford with a foot and knee injury that, believe it or not, has hampered him most of the season. It is scary to think that Clowney wasn’t 100 percent for a majority of the season. He is expected to have surgery after the bowl game. Who knows what level he will be on next season when he could be not only a year stronger, but pain-free.
Clowney’s sack total Saturday night was the most ever for a player in Death Valley’s 71 year-old history. The sophomore defensive end has picked up weekly honors from the SEC three times this season. He’s also a finalist for the national Bagurski and Bendaric awards that will be handed out next month.
Clowney isn’t a guy that says a whole lot, but he did offer some interesting tidbits after Saturday night’s win over USC. Clowney dropped nuggets like this: “It’s a big statement. To me it’s ACC vs SEC and everyone knows where the most physical ball comes out of, SEC and we came out there and try to really physical and push them around and show them who’s tougher.”
