Who was committed at this time a year ago?

May 07, 2018

Last year, one week into the month of May, the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class had seven commitments. None were on board yet for 2019.

The Gamecocks currently have a 10-man class for 2019 and two commitments have already been accepted for 2020.

Let’s take a quick look back and compare the classes:

Class of 2018

South Carolina had five commitments to the class before May began, including 2017 holdover Tyreek Johnson, who greyshirted because of an injury he suffered in high school.

Not counting Johnson, 3-star wide receiver Darius Rush was first to join the class, followed by 3-star lineman LaMarius Benson, who ended up signing with UCF.

A pair of highly-ranked 3-star offensive linemen — Hank Manos and Maxwell Iyama — committed within a week of each other.

In May, 3-star running back Deshaun Fenwick and 3-star linebacker Ernest Jones IV joined the class.

All six of those early commitments who signed with the Gamecocks enrolled in January.

Class of 2019

Last July, South Carolina picked up 2019 commitment No. 1 when 3-star linebacker Ahdarrious Gee announced his decision, but he’s no longer in the class, since he de-committed on Jan. 20. The Gamecocks added two more members to the haul while Gee was still on board, 3-star lineman Jaylen Nichols and 3-star defensive end Rodricus Fitten.

Within two weeks of Gee’s de-commitment, the class more than doubled in size, adding 3-star tackle Mark Fox, 3-star junior college defensive end Devontae Davis, 4-star wide receiver Jamario Holley and 3-star center Vincent Murphy.

Two more commitments were accepted in March, 3-star tight end KeShawn Toney and 3-star JUCO defensive tackle Jahkeem Green.

April was marked by a pair of 4-star additions, quarterback Ryan Hilinski and tight end Traevon Kenion.

The Gamecocks’ class is currently ranked 13th in the country and sixth among teams from the SEC.

Class of 2020

Two commitments already have been accepted and a third could be on the way this week, if South Carolina’s coaches are ready.

Three-star running back Mecose Todd committed in February and guard Tyshawn Wannamaker followed in April.

Nationally, the two-man haul is the 16th-ranked class. It’s eighth in the SEC.
