In order for a team to get an At Large bid to a BCS Bowl game, they must first finish the final season BCS ranking at #14 or greater. The BCS Bowl has the option of choosing a team based on a PREFERENCE, provided they meet all the necessary criteria. Clemson will.
.
The advantage to the Bowl selection committee is that they get to cherry pick a team that they think will best represent the BOWL as seen on television by way of ticket sells and viewership. No bowl wants it's overnight ratings to be so crappy that they have to apologize to the sponsor that ponied up millions to put their name on a stinker.
.
I remember reading about last year's Orange Bowl tv ratings during the first half vs the second half. They lost more than half of the Neilson viewers. I hear taters constantly talking about how well their fan base travels, and it's one of the biggest lies they tell. Clemson had to eat $390,070 worth of tickets last year because they couldn't sell them. This, in a year when they won their conference championship for the first time in 20 years. The year before, at the Meineke Bowl, they ate nearly $250,000 worth of tickets to a bowl that was less than 100 miles from their home stadium. The taters whined that the Orange Bowl was "inconvenient" because it was 600 miles from home and it was on a Wednesday. New Orleans is also 600 miles from home and this year's Sugar is also on a Wednesday.
.
Tack onto that, the abysmal showing of the ACC in BCS Bowl games over the history of the BCS and you have one great big sour grape that does not sit well with a selection committee that has the choice of several teams they could pick from. Personally, I don't think Clemson is a viable pick over a team that is having a "break out" year with a fan base that is hungry for a good New Year's Day vacation.
