Will Muschamp’s August to-do list

The month of August will be about as close as you’re going to get to seeing Will Muschamp push South Carolina recruiting to the back-burner.
August is now a dead period, which means no in-person contact is permitted between coaches and prospects, on or off campus. Coaches are still allowed to call and send letters, so you can bet your bottom dollar that Muschamp will maximize his opportunities there.
Even before the change, August wasn’t exactly a busy recruiting month. For the most part, it was pretty much devoted to your own team.
High school prospects were tied up at home, preparing for their upcoming seasons with two-a-day practices, scrimmages and jamborees while college coaches were busy trying to figure out which of their current players would help them win right now.

As long as it’s within the legal limit, it would be a nice win for Muschamp and the Gamecocks’ defensive brain trust if they’re able to get 4-star linebacker Channing Tindall over to Williams-Brice Stadium this month for one of the scrimmages.
Preseason team scrimmages were once prime opportunities for recruits to visit and get a first-hand look at the product on the field before the two parties intermingled. Unfortunately, for everyone involved, those days are over.
A scrimmage would be an ideal opportunity for Tindall to get an early look at what he could do in a South Carolina uniform. Senior Bryson Allen-Williams is slated to play a role that might be similar to what Tindall would occupy, if he chooses to stay home and suit up for the Gamecocks.
Tindall’s high school, Spring Valley, is about 20 minutes from Williams-Brice Stadium, which will house South Carolina’s first scrimmage of the month at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12th. No. 2 is set for seven days later at 9 a.m. And, of course, there’s the open practice on the night of Monday, Aug. 24.

South Carolina closed out the month of July on a high note, landing a commitment from 3-star safety Jonathan Gipson (Hoschton, Ga.). Gipson was the seventh commitment of the month to the 2018 class and the Gamecocks’ eighth overall. More could be on the way in August.
For now, the only firm date is from Raiqwon O’Neal, a 3-star lineman out of Conway (S.C.) High School. He’ll announce on Aug. 16. South Carolina’s primary competition figures to be Maryland and Rutgers.
Four-star wide receiver Josh Vann (Tucker, Ga.) is closing in on a decision between South Carolina and Georgia. He could reach a conclusion before the end of the month, but there is no set date.
The same goes for 4-star cornerback Jaycee Horn (Alpharetta, Ga.). South Carolina continues to jockey with Alabama and Tennessee.
Jovaughn Gwyn, a 3-star offensive guard from Charlotte, N.C., is mulling his trio of suitors, which also includes Duke and North Carolina State.
