Will Muschamp’s philosophy as the South Carolina recruiting coordinator
November 16, 2017
Will Muschamp, the South Carolina football coach with a defensive mind who’s a dogged recruiter and an expert grill master.
“One of my favorite things to do outside of football is grilling,” Muschamp said, during his call-in show on Thursday night.
“And don’t ask me to grill the food if I can’t shop for the groceries, so if we’re going to have a good steak, I’m going to go buy the steak.”
That’s why Muschamp appointed himself as the Gamecocks recruiting coordinator. Some of his philosophy, no doubt, comes from a stint in the NFL.
“I learned so much when I was at the Miami Dolphins and I went through the draft process in evaluating a player,” Muschamp said, “Not just from an athletic ability, from a decision-making, off the field – obviously, when you’re recruiting a student-athlete, from a college standpoint, the transcript is so important.
“The decisions they make, the people around them in high school – all of these factors factor in to what the type of young men that we want within our program. You can’t fall in love with the film.”
He added, “Obviously, I have to rely on my assistants a lot, because we’re talking about a recruiting list that starts out at 300 and dwindles down to 25 on signing day, so there’s a lot of information.”
Those coaches are expected to evaluate film, character and high school transcripts before the final spring before signing day, when Muschamp then zeroes in on “about 40 guys” to personally recruit.
