Will Muschamp ‘really pleased’ with start to South Carolina’s signing day
Feb. 01, 2017
So it’s little wonder that coach Will Muschamp said he is “extremely upbeat” on ESPNU as part of the network’s signing day programming.
“We really like where we are,” Muschamp said. “It has been a lot less dramatic than it was last signing day. We kinda knew going in where we were and where we stood with some young men.
“We are really pleased with the day so far.”
South Carolina has had a hiccup-free morning on signing day, landing the three prospects it expected it would. Jones County (Miss.) Junior College defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw recommitted to the Gamecocks, while Tucker (Ga.) defensive lineman Aaron Sterling and Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward offensive tackle Jordon Carty committed to South Carolina.
“Javon, we needed to get bigger on defense,” Muschamp said. “We needed have more girth on defense and to be more physical in the run game. He certainly contributes to that being 6-6, 300-plus. We are excited about him getting back in the fold.”
South Carolina still is waiting on the biggest announcement of the day, which comes this afternoon from Grayson (Ga.) defensive back Jamyest Williams. Williams is committed to South Carolina and will announce his decision between USC and Georgia.
Muschamp also commented on the signing of Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando wide receiver OrTre Smith, an early enrollee, as well as Chapin (S.C.) tight end Will Register.
“OrTre Smith is a young man out of Wando High School, who we are extremely pleased with,” Muschamp said. “He is on campus right now, working out with our football team. Will Register, a tight end that has been committed to coach Steve Spurrier and them before we got here. Stay committed and we really appreciate his loyalty.”
