Will Muschamp likens 4-star DL target to one of his best players at Florida

When Will Muschamp looks at M.J. Webb, he sees Jonathan Bullard.
The South Carolina coach signed Bullard out of Crest High School (Shelby, N.C.) while he was still in charge at Florida, and the standout defensive lineman went on to enjoy a wildly successful college career in The Swamp. In April, Bullard was picked by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the NFL Draft.
Webb, a four-star defensive end from Morgan County High School (Madison, Ga.), visited with Muschamp on South Carolina’s campus earlier this month.
“The whole coaching staff was out on the road, but coach Muschamp and I, we just sat down and watched film,” Webb said.
Bullard was one of the main attractions.
“How he played outside and inside, everything, and still got the job done. (Muschamp) was comparing me to Jonathan Bullard, how I could play inside and outside,” Webb said, referring to both the tackle and end positions. “I’m a player, I’ll play anywhere the coach needs me. I’ll play inside or outside, to get the job done.”
The 6-foot-5, 270-pound prospect likes what he’s seen out of Muschamp’s defenses, too. The Gators finished top 15 nationally in total yards allowed during all four of Muschamp’s seasons in Gainesville, Fla.
“He’s a great coach. The way he runs it, it’s a 4-3 or a 3-4 (base defense). I like that. We do that a little bit. We’re 3-4 strong, but he was just showing how he would prepare for the NFL,” Webb said.
Return visits to Columbia are on tap for Webb later this summer and again in the fall. Webb’s already scheduled an official visit to South Carolina for the weekend of the Georgia game (Oct. 8).
After his June visits to Auburn and Tennessee, Webb will also start trimming down his list of top schools.
“I’m still weighing out everything,” he said, “But I’ll release a top six or seven schools, then narrow it down, to focus on these main schools.”
