Will Muschamp updates the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class
November 10, 2017
During his weekly call-in show on Thursday night, coach Will Muschamp spoke about the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class.
Obviously, the Gamecocks coach didn’t name names, but he was pretty specific about what’s in store for the upcoming cycle.
“Recruiting is a little different now, because of the early signing date on Dec. 20,” Muschamp said. “I think that you will find out a lot about where you are with young men, whether they sign with you Dec. 20 or not. They still can visit your university, even if they’re not coming mid-year.
“We probably are going to have about 12 mid-year guys this year, which is the most I’ve ever been around.”
Among the commitments expected to enroll early: 4-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner, 3-star defensive back R.J. Roderick, 3-star center Hank Manos, 3-star wide receiver Darius Rush, 3-star offensive lineman Wyatt Campbell, 3-star running back Deshaun Fenwick, 3-star defensive end Tyreek Johnson, 3-star linebacker Ernest Jones IV, 3-star running back Lavonte Valentine and 3-star offensive tackle Maxwell Iyama.
South Carolina still has some needs, Muschamp added.
“You look up front, defensively, we’ve got some needs there. We need another linebacker to step up and be a part of what we’re doing,” he said, “Continue to get some secondary guys and, obviously, there’s an offensive tackle out there we’d love to have.”
Among the Gamecocks remaining prospects: 5-star defensive end K.J. Henry, 4-star defensive back Saivion Smith, 4-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum, 4-star linebacker Channing Tindall, 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield, 4-star cornerback Jaycee Horn, 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge and 3-star defensive end Jarrett Jackson.
Henry, Smith and Jackson will be in Columbia this weekend on official visits. Wonnum will take another unofficial.
