COLUMBIA —Saturday’s South Carolina-Georgia game set the record for the largest crowd in Williams-Brice Stadium history with an attendance of 85,199.
That beat the 2001 record, when there were 85,000 fans on hand to see USC beat Clemson, 20-15.
And the Gamecocks needed everyone of the Garnet and Black fans.
“I was thinking our stadium was probably the loudest in the country today with everything that was going on,” Spurrier said. “I know the Swamp is loud, but this is sort of a first time for us with two top-10 teams. That’s happened a bunch in the Swamp, but our fans had so much energy coming into this game that I knew it would be a loud one.”
Another Spurrier milestone
USC’s 35-7 win gave Spurrier his 250th career victory, including his pro and college records.
“This was actually my 250th overall win as a coach, and having it against the Georgia Bulldogs is special, too. That’s a team that used to beat my alma mater (Florida) very well. I’ve been fortunate as a coach against them, not so much as a player, but as a coach so that was special.”
Large Margin
USC’s 28-point win was the largest margin of victory against Georgia since a 27-10 win in 1978. The Gamecocks also beat the Bulldogs 17-0 in 1903.
The third largest margin of victory all-time for USC in the series came in 1959 when it won 30-14.
First-half woes
Georgia’s 21-0 first-half deficit was its largest since trailing Alabama, 31-0, in 2008. The Bulldogs went on to lose that game to the Crimson Tide, 41-30. UGA’s largest comeback under Mark Richt was an 18-point rally in the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl against Virginia Tech, a game the Bulldogs won, 31-24 after trailing 21-3 at the half.
Ace high
USC receiver/punt returner Ace Sanders took a UGA punt back 70 yards for a score with 5:18 left in the first quarter, extending the Gamecocks’ lead to 21-0. Sanders now has two career touchdowns on punt returns and the longest return in his career. His had a 68-yard return for a touchdown against East Carolina in the 2011 opener.
King of catch
Former Habersham Central product and senior receiver Tavarres King extended his streak of registering a catch in 21 consecutive games.
He caught a 16-yard pass in the second quarter.
Coming out of his Shell
USC sophomore right tackle Mike Matulis has been battling a sprained shoulder, but Spurrier said this week that he expected Matulis to be fine. However, redshirt freshman Brandon Shell started at right tackle for the second consecutive game.
He also started the 2012 opener at Vanderbilt at left tackle.
Three different players have started at right tackle for USC.
