WITH VIDEO: Martin meets with media Bryant suspended for first five games

Nov. 08, 2021

The South Carolina basketball team will open the season at home tomorrow night against USC-Upstate, and the Gamecocks will be without leading returning scorer and rebounder forward Keyshawn Bryant. Gamecock head coach Frank Martin, at his first weekly press conference of the season, announced Bryant has been suspended for the first five games for violating athletic department policy. He did not elaborate.

Outside of missing Bryant, Martin said all other players will be ready to go as he begins his 10th season with the Gamecocks. Coming off a Covid-ravaged six-win campaign, Martin said he’s back to being his old self, and he has a lot of excitement about this season.

The Gamecocks have practically rebuilt their roster with veteran transfers and freshmen. Martin said he has a deep squad and could play as many as ten regularly.

Two years ago, Bryant's suspension would have bothered me, but he's largely been a disappointment after his Freshman season.

Kotsar, not him or Lawson, anchored the team during the 2019-20 season, the last real season we had before Covid shut the SECT down.

Keep coachin', keep playin', man.

I agree, but it still bothers me. We just seem to always have so much attrition in the MBB program under Martin. Seems we always take 1 step forward, 1 step back. Wasn't there an article put out just a week ago or so about Bryant embracing taking a leadership role with the team? I'm hoping this isn't just the start of more attrition for the season. We'll see.....

I have noticed that many times the event that triggers the disciplinary stuff and the public announcement has occurred a good bit earlier than the announcement date.

Maybe it was just bonehead thing something that happened over the summer break.

Frank didn't seem too happy about it.
