Woodmont lineman Young thrilled to be bound for USC
07/22/13

Woodmont offensive lineman Malik Young knew that he wanted to play his college football at South Carolina, he just wasn't sure if the Gamecocks wanted him.

In late May, Young and USC both got their wish.

Gamecocks offensive line coach Shawn Elliott offered Young on May 21, and the rising senior quickly committed to the Gamecocks a week later.

Young said the offer from USC was like a dream coming true.

“It was one of the best experiences of my life,” Young said. “My momma is from Columbia, and the South Carolina Gamecocks have been my favorite team since I was in the ninth grade.”

The guard is considered a three-star prospect by Scout and ESPN and a two-star prospect by Rivals and 247sports. The offer came as a bit of a surprise as USC was his first Division I offer.

“It was great,” Young said. “I went from being an unknown to getting picked up and offered by South Carolina.”

When Elliott offered Young, he called Young's mom and told her the news as well.

“She was excited,” Young said. “The Gamecocks are her favorite school and she loves Coach Spurrier. Plus I get to play close to home so it's great.”

Young is excited to get to Columbia and play for Elliott. “I think he's one of the best offensive line coaches in the nation,” he said.

Despite the offer being somewhat of a surprise, it did not come completely out of nowhere.

Young visited USC's camp as a sophomore and was told by Elliott at the time an offer may come.

“After the camp he told me that I had a lot of upside,” Young said. “He said he was going to come back to school this year, and he came back and offered me. I was expecting it because I knew I had worked hard.”

Young said he is firmly committed to South Carolina and is no longer considering any other schools.

“Clemson said they might have offered me, but I don't like Clemson that much,” he said. “Their coach wanted me to go to camp after (USC) offered me, but I knew what school I wanted to commit to.”
