Union County WR said he will commit Friday to Gamecocks
Dynamic pass catcher among top recruits in SC
He caught 50 passes for 1,300 yards and 17 TDs in 2015
WR Shi Smith (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) of Union County said Thursday night he will commit to USC coach Will Muschamp Friday morning when he returns for his fourth visit of the week. Smith camped with the Gamecocks Monday then returned on Tuesday and Thursday. His father and some friends will join him on the visit.
Smith had strong interest early on in his recruiting from Clemson. He also drew offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, NC State and Oklahoma. But he said no one recruited harder and with more consistency than the Gamecocks.
"They coaches have been on me a lot, keeping in touch with me," Smith said. "They are showing me that they really want me."
Smith caught 50 passes last season for 1300 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also returns kicks and punts and the coaches see him filling the role of a recently departed Gamecock star.
"They see me in kind of like the same role as Pharoh Cooper, playing inside and outside and doing sweeps and stuff like that," Smith said.
Smith also is happy he'll have the opportunity to stay close to home for his college career.
"It's going to mean a lot to my mom because she's busy with work and with me staying in state she can come and watch me play."
Smith will become the 3rd commitment of the week for the Gamecocks, the 13th overall in the 2017 class and the 9th from the state of South Carolina.
