Xavier Thomas sets return visit to South Carolina; more Gamecocks recruiting updates

Nov. 17, 2016

Back again

Xavier Thomas, just seven days removed from his visit to Florida, will return to South Carolina. That’s right, the 5-star defensive end from Florence, S.C., is going to visit the Gamecocks again.

Thomas was just in town a couple of weeks ago for the 31-21 win over Missouri. The return to South Carolina to see them play Western Carolina comes on the heels of his trip to Florida, just like last weekend, when he was a week removed from trip to Alabama.

South Carolina first had him on campus this season for the East Carolina game. He’s also been to Clemson and Georgia for game day visits in 2016. One might presume that he’ll head to Clemson next weekend when South Carolina travels to Death Valley.

On Friday night, Thomas will travel to Chapin (S.C.) High School with his teammates from Wilson-Florence for a 4A first-round playoff game. Chapin, of course, is home to 3-star tight end commitment Will Register.

Closing the book on Calbert

Three-star offensive tackle K’Rojhn Calbert told SEC Country reporter Jesse Simonton that South Carolina has finished second in his recruitment. Tennessee, of course, landed the in-state prospect from Warren County High School in McMinnville, Tenn.

Calbert indicated that he loved the program, Muschamp and offensive line coach Shawn Elliott, but beating the local school was too much for the Gamecocks to overcome. Florida also received consideration.

Targets such as 4-star prospect Tony Gray (Lawrenceville, Ga.), 3-star recruit Jerry Drake Jr. (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and 3-star talent Marcus McKethan (Barnwell, S.C.) are among the options for South Carolina. Four-star prospect T.J. Moore, a former Gamecocks commitment, also remains in contact.

Recruiting roundup

There were multiple tweets on Wednesday that former South Carolina defensive tackle commitment Javon Kinlaw has scheduled an official visit to Alabama.

On Wednesday night, Southern Cal offered the Jones County Junior College prospect, who’s originally from Goose Creek (S.C.) High School.

Four-star safety Deangelo Gibbs, who’s teammates with Gray and South Carolina commitment Jamyest Williams, was on campus earlier this month for the Tennessee game. Georgia is considered to be the favorite.

Jairus Brents, the 2018 cornerback South Carolina offered earlier this week, told Phil Kornblut about his offer from the Gamecocks.

“I was very thankful for the offer,” Brents said. “Coach Muschamp was at Florida and had a big role in developing Vernon Hargreaves, and coach T-Rob (Travaris Robinson) is one of the most-energetic coaches in the business. One of my mentors is Rachiem Monroe and he played corner at South Carolina. He has told me a lot of good things about the school, so I wanted to see if for myself.”

The 4-star player from Waggener Traditional in Louisville, Ky., is the No. 25-ranked cornerback in the country.

Earlier this week, Kornblut was in touch with 2017 3-star defensive end Matthew Butler, who’s out of Garner (N.C.) High School. Garner said that he will not take an official visit to South Carolina.

“I’ve already let the South Carolina staff know that,” Butler said. “They’re still in it. I’ve seen what I need to see from South Carolina, the players, the coaches and the academics and all of that on my summer visits.”

Butler has already taken official visits to Duke, N.C. State, Penn State and Texas A&M. Tennessee, the school thought to be his leader, is in line for No. 5.

New offers out

All of the prospects listed below claim offers from South Carolina. Each landed a new offer on Wednesday:

  • 2018 LB Channing Tindall (Auburn), Spring Valley, S.C.
  • 2018 CB Christopher Smith (Georgia), Atlanta, Ga.
  • 2018 OL Warren Ericson (Maryland), Duluth, Ga.
