On Sunday, 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas reminded reporters at The Opening in Orlando that South Carolina was his dream school.
The No. 2-ranked player in the class of 2018 made another pretty revealing statement about his interest in the Gamecocks.
If Steve Spurrier was still the head coach, things would be different right now.
“I would have been committed, if all that wouldn’t had happened,” Thomas said, during an interview with SBNation. “That was my dream school. But they went down in a ditch and coach (Will) Muschamp’s trying to bring it back up, so I’m looking to see what they’re doing.”
Thomas told SEC Country reporter Zach Abolverdi that he believes Muschamp and his staff have the ship pointed in the direction.
“It’s great, what they did with all the freshmen,” Thomas said. “Coach Steve Spurrier left them in a ditch. Coach Muschamp and his staff are building them up, so I’m looking forward to see what they do this season.”
According to an interview with Dawg Nation’s Jeff Sentell the former Wilson High School (Florence, S.C.) standout is 50/50 between South Carolina and Clemson.
“I haven’t been to South Carolina for a while, but everyone expects me to go to Clemson, because they have the new facilities and they just won a championship. I already knew about the facility. I already expected them to win the championship,” Thomas said. “I’m just looking forward to seeing South Carolina and how they do with this upcoming season.”
SEC Country reporter Chris Kirschner also spoke with Thomas, who lists Alabama as another option.
“With South Carolina, I can go there and try to rebuild the program. With Clemson, I can go there and keep building what they have built. It’s a pretty hard decision,” Thomas said. “Alabama separates itself from the other (non-South Carolina) schools because of its name and the legacy the school has. I still talk to the coaching staff all of the time.”
