Talent does win out and recruiting the best does matter. Case in point Gamecocks women basketball loaded with 4 and 5 stars. Clemson loaded with 4 and 5 stars. If you want a chance to win big meaning Championships you have to have the STARS followed by good coaching. Yes you can win 7 or 8 sometimes 9 with less talent on hand with great coaching put you must have the stars. Agree or not, prove me wrong!! Let's hear it crew?

I think it's also important to have good evaluations on those stars. Demetris Summers comes to mind for us. Others outside of the program, like Mitch Mustain didn't pan out all that well either.

Agreed.

Stars are sometimes a self fulfilling prophecy. Seems like a lot of prospects get stars simply get stars based on the offers from big time programs.

Thats where your coaches come in to thread through the false stars. Very important to have a staff and coach be capable weeding them out. But the star system has gotten better in itself, weeding out the the talent. Adjusting the star ranking process throughout the season does help that cause.  but still problems there to as where a 5 star commits too, sometimes diminish the stars case in point Lloyd. All had him 5 star then all had him set as 4 star after his commit to the Gamecocks. But one ranking did put him back at 5 star.  Which we all know this kid will be a baller at the college level as well.

Yeah that is one of the other problems with the whole star system. Much like the other rankings in college sports, there is a biased lean towards certain programs.

Dawn knows her stars hate to say this so does Bimbo in the upstate. Now that we have 2 of are own in football really hope to see the staff make the right decisions. Only one that worries me is Burch. Why? his work ethic.

Well from what I remember, Clowney had a bit of a work ethic problem too. Fortunately for us and him, his talent and ability made up for it.

X’s & O’s don’t matter if you don’t have the Jimmy’s and Joe’s

Sure, there are obvious "busts" or whatevers with 4 & 5* players, but the teams that most often win the recruiting battles, win the games.  Talent rules.  Recruiting is the lifeblood of college athletics at the highest level.  Some games can be won on coaching and system, but champions almost always have the best group of players playing their best at the time.  CU football is talented at most all key positions and 2-3 deep in many.

I think stars matter.  I would say it is a good bet if you look at the teams with top 10-15 recruiting rankings, they are usually the ones in the CFP and winning it all.  Plenty of high star players are busts, but teams like Bama, taters, LSU, OSU, OK and even UGA get enough 4-5 start players that their busts are not a big deal.  Programs like ours that only get a few players ranked with 4-5 stars are much more prone to seeing "busts".  I think it's safe to say that Dabo and staff have done an amazing job evaluating and recruiting top talent.  And yes, it helps their schedule is soft.  Look at the OSU and LSU games for them.  Those were much tougher than their conference schedule where their starters were not playing in the 4th quarter.

I would much rather build a team around 4-5 star players vs. hoping my lower ranked players can be coached up or were not ranked properly.

Yes you nailed it. That was my thinking. Stars do matter.
