Fans storm field after South Carolina upsets Tennessee
Nov. 20, 2022

The fans at Williams-Brice Stadium weren’t going to be denied on Saturday night. As the final buzzer sounded, fans stormed the field to celebrate South Carolina’s 63-38 victory over No. 5 Tennessee. The ESPN broadcast showed fans taking selfies with Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler. Then during USC coach Shane Beamer’s post-game interview, students gathered behind him chanting “Beamer Ball! Beamer Ball!”

Gamecock students started getting ready to rush the field about midway through the fourth quarter as the Gamecocks continued to pour it on the Vols. Event staff members were standing in front of the section for a while but cleared the way late in the game.. The field storming will come at a price from the Southeastern Conference. A school is fined $50,000 for their first offense and $100,000 for a second. If it happens three times, the school has to pay $250,000.

The money paid for the fine is deposited into the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund. “When people want to go, they want to go,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said on the SEC Network last month. “But we have to re-train people to stay in the stands.”
