CLEMSON – The University of South Carolina baseball team fell for the first time this season as Clemson scored four runs in the first three innings of play on its way to a 5-2 win over the Gamecocks Friday night (March 3) at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Cooper Ingle led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left. With one out, back-to-back doubles plated a second run. Clemson scored single runs in the second and third and a run in the sixth on Gavin Abrams home run.
Carolina scored a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Talmadge LeCroy. The Gamecocks got the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Carson Hornung’s RBI sacrifice fly and a Dylan Brewer single, but a groundout ended the game.
Will Sanders allowed four earned runs with nine strikeouts and a walk in six innings of work, taking the loss. Eli Jerzembeck struck out four in two innings of relief. LeCroy and Ethan Petry had two hits apiece for the Carolina offense.
POSTGAME NOTES
  • Sanders has 23 strikeouts against the Tigers in his last two outings.
  • This is the first game of the season that the Gamecocks did not hit a home run.
  • Brewer picked up his first hit of the year on Friday night.
  • Carolina was one of nine unbeaten teams heading into tonight’s game.
