MarShawn Lloyd on coordinator Marcus Satterfield Please stop disrespecting Coach Sat

Oct. 24, 2022

Gamecocks OC Marcus Satterfield has come under plenty of fire during his 20 games so far as the Gamecocks’ Offensive Coordinator. Sunday, starting running back MarShawn Lloyd came to his defense. “Please stop disrespecting Coach Sat! He’s literally the most dedicated coach I’ve ever had,” Lloyd tweeted. “This man does not take his job lightly. I wish everyone could see all he put into this. Every time something goes wrong everyone goes straight to it being his fault when really it be us!”

The latest ire surrounding Satterfield comes after another poor showing by the Gamecock offense Saturday night's win vs. Texas A&M 30-24 on Saturday night in a game the Gamecocks struggled to find a flow offensively for the bulk of the evening. The Gamecocks recorded just 98 yards in the first half the second-worst mark of the year. Quarterback Spencer Rattler notched his worst day as a passer since arriving at South Carolina, completing just 48% of his 28 throws. Lloyd, too, didn’t factor into the contest until the final 30 minutes, receiving just three carries in the first two quarters.

That inability to find a rhythm let the Aggies hang around in a game the Gamecocks were up 17-0 just five minutes into, but couldn’t pull away until the latest stages of the contest. “It was 17-0 in the blink of an eye,” Rattler said. “We got in the red zone so quickly we were like, ‘What’s our rhythm here? What’re we going to call?’ We were kind of thrown off guard. I thought we called some plays that they guarded really well, especially those first three plays in the red zone. “We did a lot of great things in the first half, we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Got the first down, then we get a penalty. We had some balls that should’ve gone our way. Things like that.”

South Carolina called eight direct snaps to backup tailback Christian-Beal Smith, a look they hadn’t used all season. One of those attempts converted a third down, one resulted in a five-yard touchdown and two failed to convert in third-and-short-yardage situations. South Carolina would find its stride in the second half, outpacing A&M 188-184 in yardage over the game’s final 30 minutes. That included Lloyd running for 81 of his 92 yards and both his touchdowns in the second half. The Gamecocks currently boast the Southeastern Conference’s sixth-best scoring offense, but it’s come in a slog. South Carolina ranks ninth in the league in passing, 10th in rushing, and 10th in total offense.
