USC-UNC football opener in Charlotte to be in ESPN’s ‘College GameDay

“College GameDay” is coming to the Carolinas. ESPN announced on Monday afternoon that its weekly college football pregame showcase show will broadcast from the South Carolina-North Carolina season opener slated for Sept. 2 in Charlotte. “Can’t wait! Tons of work to do between now and then,” coach Shane Beamer posted to Twitter shortly after the news was released. The show begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 2 and will air for three hours live from Romare Bearden Park in uptown Charlotte to kick off the 37th season of “GameDay” and the 30th year of road shows.

The Gamecocks and Tar Heels will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. They last met in the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Bowl also in Charlotte in a game in which Shane Beamer’s squad capped off a 7-6 debut season with a 38-21 win. USC’s most recent appearance on “College GameDay” came in 2014, while UNC’s last feature came in 2010. “GameDay” has also been to Charlotte three times in the last six years, including originating from Romare Bearden Park before the 2017 ACC Championship Game and the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Classic when Georgia faced Clemson in a Week 1 top-five showdown. .

South Carolina heads into the matchup following an 8-5 campaign, including wins over No. 5 Tennessee and No. 8 Clemson over the final two games of the regular season. Beamer also currently boasts a 15-11 record over his two campaigns in Columbia entering Year 3. The Tar Heels finished the 2022 season 9-5, dropping four straight games to close out their schedule. That included a loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship and a Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon.
