Gamecocks lose two asst coaches in Connor Shaw and Erik Kimrey

Feb. 02, 2022

The departure of USC great Connor Shaw, who worked as Beamer’s director of football relations in 2021 after joining Will Muschamp’s staff as director of player development in 2020, was confirmed Wednesday morning. Reports that tight ends coach and former South Carolina quarterback Erik Kimrey would also be leaving his position on Beamer’s staff for an out-of-state high school job broke a few hours later Wednesday. Beamer addressed the departures in his opening statement of a signing day press conference Wednesday afternoon.

“I wish those guys well,” Beamer said. “Those guys are leaving on fantastic terms. Erik and I have been talking about this potential opportunity for the last two and a half weeks. I know it wasn’t an easy decision for him.” Beamer said he and Shaw had also been having conversations about Shaw’s new opportunity throughout the past week and a half. He said Shaw will be transitioning to a career outside of athletics.

Shaw told The State in a message he would be “transitioning into a career-best for me and my (family),” and said he would stay involved and support Beamer’s program. “Connor is brilliant and will be successful in anything he wants to do,” Beamer said. “It is a new challenge outside of the athletics world. It was something he was in before he came to work here. … It was a great situation for him. He is going to be around here a lot. He just won’t have an office here. (There is) no greater Gamecock than Connor Shaw.

I hate he won’t be downstairs next to Derrick Moore in that office.” Beamer emphasized the fact Shaw and Kimrey were not leaving USC because of any displeasure with the Gamecocks’ program. He mentioned that three other assistants have turned down other offers at Power Five schools and said he didn’t anticipate losing any other coaches. “One trillion percent, they aren’t leaving because they don’t like working here,” Beamer said. “(They were) emotional decisions and meetings.”
