Why have we went away from it? I think we ran it once against Florida and was pretty obvious considering the down and yardage on what we were going to do, but I think it's a very effective formation. Gives us the ability to utilize the fullback and play smash mouth football and wear down those d-line an linebackers right off the rip. Seems like once moving the ball, it would set up nicely for some play action to our big tight ends or even Byrd going deep.

I'm in favor of using the I against teams like UCF, Coastal, etc where we have a clear advantage over the DL. I am not in favor of running it much against teams like Florida who have great DLs and LBs. Why? Because their penetration blows it up and it's usually accompanied by very easy running schemes that talented front 7s don't have trouble stopping unless the are facing a stout run-blocking OL.

The problem with our zone read right now is that Shaw is hobbled and the defense doesn't concern too much with him, so it's not a true "read", it's a straight give.

If one were to do a film study of our season I think they would find that our production out of I-Formation is phenomenal. It drives me absolutely nuts when it is 2nd and 2 or 3rd and 2 and we are running the ball out of the shotgun. I wish there was a way to see the offense statistics out of each formation. I'm sure the coaches have it! A significant amount of Mike Davis's big runs this season have been out of I-Formation.

So what's going to happen to the zone read with Thompson and Mitch back there?
