“We got whipped” Will Muschamp says it will take recruiting to change USC program

Nov. 27, 2016

Will Muschamp watched his team get dominated by Clemson Saturday night. (Travis Bell/SIDELINE CAROLINA)
Clemson trounced USC 56-7 Saturday night in a game that will go down as one of the most dominating performances in the history of the Palmetto Bowl. As bad as it was it probably could have been worse. The Tigers out gained the Gamecocks 622 to 218, notched 40 first downs to Carolina’s 14 and probably could have done more if they didn’t start taking out the starters in the second half.

After the beat down Will Muschamp didn’t spend a lot of time elaborating on what went wrong.  “Not a whole lot to say.  We got beat by a better football team. Disappointing, especially the way we started the game, but give them credit. They’ve got a good team, all three phases, and we got whipped. On the road recruiting tomorrow. That’s the way we will change our program and that’s what we need to do. Go recruit.”

Beyond that there were a lot of one or two word answers from a clearly frustrated Muschamp. How did he feel about how the game ended with Clemson taking a back to back  timeouts to recognize seniors? “It is what it is.” What does he say to his guys after a loss like this? “We’ll get ready for bowl practice.”  Was Clemson doing anything exotic to confuse them? “No. They were just doing really good. They’ve got good players.”

What is there really to say when you’ve been clobbered by a team that is light years better than you? There’s a grand canyon talent gap between these two rivals and Muschamp knows it as well as anyone.

INJURY UPDATE:

Jake Bentley was dealing with a knee injury which is why Muschamp took him out of the game. He said it isn’t serious but Bentley was having a hard time pushing off of it so he made the switch to Brandon McIlwain.

As for what some of the Gamecock players were thinking after the game, they were more disappointed in their own performance than awed by Clemson’s, and they vowed to change things in the rivalry next season.
