Reigning Champs Open Title Defense Monday – University of South Carolina Athletics

The Michigan Series

The Gamecocks and Wolverines have played three times prior to tonight with South Carolina claiming all three games by an average of 15.7 points. The most recent meeting was in December 1995.

Season Openers

South Carolina is 14-2 in season openers under head coach Dawn Staley with the two losses coming in her first three seasons at the helm. Five of those 16 season openers were against ranked opponents.

The Gamecocks are opening the season with a neutral game for the second year in a row. Last season’s historic college basketball debut in Paris saw #6/4 South Carolina top #10/10 Notre Dame 100-71 on Nov. 6.
 
Well the girls debuted last night against Michigan. This Michigan team had the 8th ranked recruiting class in the country and it was on full display last night. That Swords girl (27 points) put on quite a clinic and she seems to be the real deal. She was the star of the game last night.

My observations:

Michigan was focused and ready to play. They are going to be a dangerous team as long as that Swords girl stays healthy.

Sania Feagin is not the answer at Center.

Chloe Kitts saved our ass last night, she was the ONLY GC last night that had a good game. 19p/14r

Edwards showed some nice minutes but also looked like a freshman at times.

Tac was very mediocre.

We really missed Watkins rebounding and defense.

Shooting was very poor. IIRC around 33%.

Free throw shooting was also very poor. 62%

Rebounds were even at 52. We usually outrebound teams by double digits.

Overall a very poor outing. I don't know if they took this game lightly or not (and it's obviously a very small sample size) but this type of effort won't cut it for a run at another NC. Mrs B was telling me that there was a lot of stuff on Facebook showing them on the Strip and hanging out with a WNBA player. Michigan may have done the same thing, who knows.

Dawn doesn't need any advice from me but for the life of me I can't understand why she doesn't play Fulwiley and Tessa Johnson more, especially on a night when everyone (except Kitts) was having a bad shooting night.
 
A wake up call that's still a win isn't the worst thing in the world.

Glad to see the charges against Watkins were dropped. Hopefully she's ready to step in and is ready to play.
