1984 Season Game Week Flashback

They showed Rocky Horror when I was a student.
but they showed it in the ballroom to get more people in.
I remember that now and I seem to recall my friends saying that the old Bush River Mall cinema used to have a Rocky Horror weekend, although it may have been the old Jefferson Square theater on either Assembly or North Main.

Aw man. That brings back some memories. The only time I ever saw a movie at the Russel House theater was The Rocky Horror Picture show. I had never seen it before and some friends dragged me to it. We had been smoking some of the funny stuff before hand, and let me tell you, I was so frigging confused. It was the whole production with the people acting out the movie in front of the movie, and the rice throwing and water pistols, etc. Don't remember much about the movie itself, other then it was not very good, but definitely remember the experience. Blew my mind.
I had never heard of the movie before, either, but my friends who did had every part of it memorized.  I thought the movie itself was just something new and different in the Freshman world of new and different things.

They also showed a lot of avantgarde movies that weren't mainstream.  I remember seeing the Japanese movie Woman in the Dunes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_in_the_Dunes

I could try to explain the movie, but it wouldn't do it justice.  The dudes I knew who also saw it cracked jokes about it the rest of the semester.  Some years later I remembered the premise of the movie and remember thinking to myself, "Oh, I get it now."  LOL

You missed it, SA, you just missed it.  LOL

The 3-0 Gamecocks showed up in the national rankings for the first time with a tie for 20th in the UPI poll after beating Georgia in Game 3.  The ranking jumped to 14th UPI and 17th AP, and the record went to 4-0 with a 49-17 drubbing of Big Eight member, Kansas State. Thomas Dendy scored two touchdowns, while Poole, Hold, Kent Hagood, Chris Corley and Jerry Dunlap had one each. Eleven different Gamecocks had rushing attempts with 78 yards by Hagood and 72 by Raynard Brown.

Carolina equaled its best start in history with a 5-0 record after whipping Pittsburgh, a pre-season pick among the nation's top five, 45-21. Hold and Mitchell each threw two touchdown passes with Chris Wade and Danny Smith each catching two for scores.

The Bush River Mall theater had midnight Rocky Horror showings every weekend for years. It was around the same time that Porky's was out which also played at the same theater for years. Interesting note, Porky's opened in Columbia and Colorado Springs 4 months before the rest of the country. I remember seeing it and thinking it was the funniest movie I had ever seen, then telling friends that lived outside Columbia about it and no one had heard about it yet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porky's#Release

The thing I remember about Porky's was the hole in the wall.  LOL

Taking to the road after five straight home games, the Gamecocks trailed Notre Dame 17-14 at halftime and fell behind 26-14 after turning the football over on the first three possessions of the second half.

A 73-yard drive produced Hold's quarterback sneak for a touchdown and Kent Hagood's two-point plunge cut the deficit to 26-22 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Hold directed a 75 yard drive, scrambling the final 33 when he could not find an open receiver, to give Carolina a 29-26 lead five minutes later. Rick Rabune recovered a Notre Dame fumble less than a minute later and Quinton Lewis scored to give Carolina a 10-point lead, 36-26.

Chris Major broke up a two-point conversion attempt and Earl Johnson intercepted a pass, with 1:40 remaining to preserve a 36-32 win. Carolina vaulted into the nation's top 10, eighth in UPI and ninth in AP.

Hold would rebound to lead the Gamecocks to a great 36-32 come-from-behind victory over the Irish.

Coming home against an East Carolina team that had fallen on hard times after a great 1983 season, Carolina took a 7-0 lead in the first four minutes on Kent Hagood's 74-yard run, but fell behind 10-7 in the second quarter. Enter Mike Hold. On the first play after he entered the game, Hold hit Ira Hillary with a 71-yard pass and Carolina was off to the races, a 42-20 decision that boosted the Gamecocks to fifth in both wire polls and boosted the record-breaking win streak to seven games. Corley, Dendy, Lewis and reserve quarterback, Jim Desmond, also contributed to the game.

On the road again, Carolina played its poorest 30 minutes to date and trailed North Carolina State 15-3 at halftime.  Raynard Brown's 12-yard run, a Scott Hagler field goal, a Hold-to-Corley pass covering 61 yards, and touchdown runs of 14 and six yards by Dendy added up to a 35-28 come-from-behind Gamecock win.

The option play was a big play for the Gamecocks in 1984. Quarterback Allen Mitchell (11) prepares to pitch to Kent Hagood (32) during USC's victory over N.C. State. (below)

The exhilaration of victory was sobered by a broken leg suffered late in the game by leading rusher, Kent Hagood. He gained 111 yards before he was injured, his second consecutive 100-yard-plus game. Hagood had rushed for 118 yards the previous week against East Carolina.

Thomas Dendy had his first 100-yard game with 106 against N.C. State. With an 8-0 record, Carolina remained fifth in both wire service polls.

A national (ABC-TV) television audience and a Williams-Brice Stadium record crowd of 75,000 was treated to Carolina's finest performance of the year in a 38-26 triumph over Florida State, which came into the Gamecocks' ninth game of the season 6-1-1 and ranked nationally .

After falling behind 7-0, Carolina tied it on Dendy's 57-yard run and before the Seminoles were to cross the goal line again, Carolina ran up a 38-7 lead, intercepting a school record of seven passes — four of them by Bryant Gilliard — to improve their record to 9-0 and vault to the second spot in the national polls.

Raynard Brown set a school record by returning the second half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, Dendy scored a second time, and Allen Mitchell threw two TD passes, one each to Danny Smith and Bill Bradshaw. Scott Hagler added a field goal.

This thread brings back numerous emotions.  I played on my high school team, we were a preseason pick to be one of the top teams in 3A in the upstate, if not the state.  Unfortunately we were run over by a Paul Vogel lead Eastside team, in the first game of the year, as they went on to win the 4A state championship.  We would officially bow out of the playoff picture with our annual defeat to Pickens High at the end of the season.

1984 was a transitional season in my life that was supplemented my professional advance in the military.  I graduated from Army Aviation Flight School in Aug and was riding a life high culminated when I attended the Pittsburg game.  It was a glorious victory on a crystal clear, cold Saturday afternoon.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  I watched the FSU game as I packed my bag to leave the next week headed to Fulda Germany on the adventure of my life.  These weeks of my life were the best memories I have of early adulthood in my civilian life.

I have many problems with our team, but 1984 locked me in for life as a Gamecock fan……and I’ll always be!

I remember the local Mitsubishi dealer sponsoring a promotion that involved paying to drive a Starion through a pylon course on one of the campus parking lots back in the day to generate interest in the car.

We tend to take the cars with outrageous horsepower for granted these days, but back then the Camaros and Mustangs were barely over the 200 HP mark.  Only 305s in the Z-28s and Trans Ams, with optional 350s in the IROC and GTA models.  Only the Vette had a 350 standard IIRC.  The Mustang GT was late to the muscle car revival, but had the slightly more powerful 5.0 Liter engine.

Armament Dogs were the hardest workers I’ve ever seen, my sincere thanks keeping us loaded, operational and putting bullets headed the bad guys way.
As with everything in the Army it was a team effort.  :cockyshotgun:
