2018 TE Gavin Schoenwald sets return

Visit set, top 5 announced
Shortly after 4-star safety (Rivals) Nate Thompson released his top 5, SEC Country confirmed with 3-star tight end Gavin Schoenwald that South Carolina was set to score a return visit on Saturday.
Thompson, a 2018 prospect out of Southern Lee High School in Sanford, N.C., included South Carolina with Virginia Tech, Duke, Syracuse and North Carolina State. The list, he wrote on Twitter, was in no particular order.
The Gamecocks hosted him last summer for camp but haven’t had him back on campus since. Thompson said he’s looking to schedule another visit to Columbia.
Schoenwald will return on Saturday, several weeks after he was on campus for the most recent SpursUp recruiting event. The 2018 prospect out of Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy visited Vanderbilt earlier this month. He’ll return there this summer, though no date has been set
South Carolina first to offer
Kamren McCray arrived to the South Carolina OL/DL Camp last Friday knowing he could break the seal on his recruitment.
The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Class of 2019 prospect from Berkeley High School in Moncks Corner, S.C., was offered by the Gamecocks after wrapping up his workout with offensive line coach Eric Wolford.
“It was just a big shock for me, because it was my first offer,” McCray said.
Coach Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper delivered the news.
“Coach Roper had already talked to me and said my performance would [determine] whether I get an offer or not,” McCray said. “Still, it’s exciting that it was my first offer.”

Before camp last week, he visited South Carolina earlier this year for a junior day event and again for the Garnet and Black spring game.
“From what I saw, it’s nice. They’re rebuilding things and pretty much starting fresh with the program,” McCray said.
Wolford has made a strong impression on McCray.
“He’s a great coach,” McCray said. “He knows what he’s talking about. He has a great background. He’s pretty straightforward. He’s going to tell you more so what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.”
Clemson hosted him for a game in the fall. On Wednesday, he’ll return for camp. Growing up, he had no allegiance to either of the in-state schools.
“I just watched college football; there was no favorite,” McCray said.
Florida hosted him this past Saturday for camp. A visit to North Carolina State is set for June 24.
4-star DT speaks
Four-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge recently spoke with Phil Kornblut about his contact with Muschamp and the Gamecocks coaches.
“He’s just saying he really wants me and has to get me down there,” Sandidge said. “They are on me hard, to be honest.”
The No. 12 overall defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 attends Concord (N.C.) High School. His mom went to South Carolina.
Earlier this spring at The Opening stop in Charlotte, Sandidge told SEC Country that he’s in no hurry to make a decision.
