In 2019 we lost our opening game to UNC. We were 2-3. Georgia was 5-0 and ranked #3. No one thought we had a chance at all.
Sounds a lot like this year. We started with a loss to UNC. We are 1-1 Georgia is 2-0. They are just ranked #1 this time. But are they really that much better than they were then. That was a really good UGA team. I think Fromm was a lot better QB than who they have now.
Hilinski got hurt and Joyner had to come in as QB. He didn't have any really big plays, but he did get us a chance by running out the clock and keeping UGA O of the field.
I just went and watched that game again. They had a lot of yards against us, but our D stopped them when they had too. We missed a FG in the 1st OT. They missed it in the 2nd OT for us to get the win.
I guess what I am saying is even though UGA has all that talent and all those wins and 2 championships. I just do not see us losing by 27. Rattler is going to get some points on the board. Our D might actually get Beck for an Interception or 2.
Can we upset them again? YES
Will we? Who knows.
But I do think we will be proud of them even if they don't win.
I am a Preacher. I do not gamble. But if I did, I would be all over those points.
My pick, 31-28 Gamecocks

That 2019 UGA team was good and we were pretty mediocre. Fromm was great all season but tossed 3 ints that game. We also had some pretty good RBs that year and much better than we have now. Here's a few stats:

2019 Season:
UGA O 223 yds Passing AVG (295 yds in the 2019 game vs SC) *(3 INTS vs SC)*
UGA O 186 yds Rushing AVG (17 3yds in the 2019 game vs SC) (1 Fumble vs SC)
UGA O 409 yds total per game AVG
UGA O 30.8 points per
UGA D 201 Passing AVG
UGA D 75 Rushing AVG
UGA D 12.6 points per
UGA 12-2 overall, 4th in final AP Poll.

SC O 223 Yds Passing AVG (155 yds in the 2019 game vs UGA)
SC O 150 Yds Rushing AVG (142 yds in the 2019 game vs UGA) (1 Fumble vs UGA)
SC O 372 yds total per game AVG
SC O 22.4 points per game
SC D 235 yds Passing AVG
SC D 158 yds Rushing AVG
SC D 26.1 points per game
SC 4-8 overall.

2019 Game 20-17 SC over UGA
Losses vs UNC, Alabama, Mo, UF UT, TAMU, App State, Clemson
Wins vs Charleston So, Kentucky, UGA, Vandy

2023 Season to date:
UGA O 344 yds Passing AVG (1 INT)
UGA O 129 yds Rushing AVG
UGA O 473 yds total per game AVG
UGA D 138 yds Passing AVG
UGA D 104 yds Rushing AVG

SC O 408 yds Passing AVG
SC O 53 yds Rushing AVG...YIKES
SC O 461 yds total per game AVG
SC D 256 yds Passing AVG
SC D 124 yds Rushing AVG

Our QB is the best we've had and playing the best he has since his 1st year in OK. We have good skill players, but who's really healthy? They have a solid D vs the pass this year and if we struggle to protect then its lights out. We have no running game, which is typically needed for a major road win. Same for if we have multiple turnovers, early issues with crowd noise, quick/short drives (3nout). Have to manage some offense and keep theirs off the field. Need their QB to toss 3 ints.

I am not a college coach and would never imagine trying to be, so my opinion does not matter in their world.
I truly think DK is an awesome football player and I feel he may become an awesome RB.
But from what I have seen, it just seems that maybe Mario and Djay need more playing time. Yes, it was Furman, but they both looked really good Saturday. It was like they found holes that DK and Juju were not able to find. I just think that comes from them having spent years playing RB. For Djay, he is straight out of HS but has always been a RB, and for Mario it is both college and HS ball.
DK may surprise us and run for 100 yards this Saturday. Like I said, I am not a college coach and do not begin to understand the players or the plays like they do so I do not mean to question who they play. I am just saying what I saw.
We can all sit on the couch and think up all kinds of great plays and use all kinds of different players and formations. I just hope
D-LO (Loggains) shows us just how good these guys can be come Saturday.
I just think if they play up to their ability, this team can beat anyone just like they did UT and Clem last season. Even a great team like UGA has off days.
I look forward to DK or someone getting our rushing Avg. to start going way up. The UGA defense will be worried about Rattler's long arm, maybe the RB's and TE's can burn them.

In recent years, watching our games with UGA have been a lot like fast-forwarding a porno video.

It starts out respectable, but eventually we get drilled over and over again. LOL

I am hoping we make a decent game of it this year.

@kingofnerf lol. Sad to agree with that. Hopefully they surprise us with multiple turnovers, we surprise them with OL and a running game. Just don't see us having anywhere near the talent along both lines, nor anything close to the depth they can throw at us. I'm hopeful we can make it a game late, see what happens, get out healthy.

Yeah I noticed in one of the recent pressers CSB said that Mario was doing some really nice things on the field and they needed to find a way to get him more minutes...this reminded me of multiple responses during the first two years where "needed to find a way to get him more minutes" never translated. Hopefully, we've learned something. If something is working, find a way to do it again and frequently.

I just hope this is the year we begin to deviate from having one good upset win and a mediocre rest of the season.

Let's shock the world, Gamecocks! Let's hope everyone is back and healthy. We need those big bodies to match up.
I've seen plenty of losses between the Hedges, but, I was present for one very sweet win. Let's do this!

Last week I texted a good friend of mine who is a UGA fan that I thought tomorrow's game might be closer than people think.

He said he was just glad the game was in Athens instead of Williams-Brice, so I think the very real possibility of an upset tomorrow is in the heads of enough Dawg fans to matter that it says something about how good we're expected to be this season.

I remember that game well, we were actually in the Bahamas (Nassau) on a Carnival cruise and I of course was wearing a GC T- shirt. We were leaving one of the many bars in Nassau and a fellow GC fan spotted me as they were coming in and he said hey man, have you heard, we're ahead and it's almost halftime. Really I replied, that's awesome.

As we worked our way back to the ship stopping for beers here and there and taking our time we finally arrived back at the ship and headed to our room to rest for awhile as we had been out and about since about 9 a.m.

Mrs B said turn on the TV and see what the score is, it's prolly over by now I said and I doubt if it's on the ship's TV network anyway. I channel surfed around and low and behold found it with the score tied and UGA's kicker lining up for the (very much in his range) field goal attempt that would have given them the win. He of course missed it and we made our attempt for the win.

After resting for a couple of hours we headed out (on the ship) for some drinking and ran into several GC fans and had drinks together as well as being congratulated by several fans of other SEC schools (to include UGA). My son even texted me and I was surprised that I received the text. Good times that night.

Our games with UGA have merely been buckets full of excuses in recent years.

Hopefully that changes today.

Hopefully we play to win and with some poise in a hostile environment on the road. Look practiced, prepared, and ready. Limit mistakes and miscues, make good decisions. Try to be in it deep into the game. It’s one thing to lose vs one of the best teams in the country and 2x defending champions, a whole other thing to look like we don’t belong in the same league.
