SCOUTING ARKANSAS
The Razorbacks took 2-of-3 games against Texas A&M this past weekend. Matt Goodheart was a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after going 10-for-17 at the plate with five home runs in four games last week. Goodheart is hitting .343 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI while Brady Slavens has 10 homers and 45 runs-batted-in. On the mound, Kevin Kopps has four saves and 54 strikeouts in 32 innings with a perfect 6-0 record. Arkansas' midweek game against Grambling was cancelled due to wintry weather in Fayetteville.

SERIES VS. ARKANSAS
This will be the first time the two teams will meet on the diamond since 2018, when the Gamecocks and Razorbacks met seven times, including three in the Fayetteville Super Regional. Arkansas has a 41-33 series advantage and won 5-of-7 games against Carolina in 2018. The Gamecocks won the middle game of the super regional, 8-5, behind a grand slam from LT Tolbert and a quality start from Cody Morris. Carolina swept Arkansas in the last meeting in Columbia in 2016.

COMEBACK KIDS IN LSU WIN
Carolina was trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh in game one of a doubleheader at LSU on April 17, but the Gamecocks scored four runs in the inning to earn a 4-2 win in an eventual doubleheader sweep. David Mendham and Colin Burgess led off the inning with singles. They moved up 90 feet on Noah Myers' sacrifice bunt and scored on Braylen Wimmer's double to right. After George Callil was hit by a pitch, Brady Allen brought in a pair with a double to left.

MENDHAM DELIVERS IN LSU SERIES
David Mendham was 4-for-9 with a triple, a home run and two RBI in the LSU series. His single in the top of the seventh inning in game one of Saturday's doubleheader started the eventual four-run inning. Then in game two, he homered in the first inning in the 9-0 win. Mendham is hitting .306 in his last 10 games with seven RBI.

0-0 Bottom 1st inning:

Brady Allen Flies out. Braylen Wimmer is walked on 4 pitches. Wes Clarke strikes out. David Mendham singles up the middle for the first hit of the game. Gamecocks on the corners with 2 outs. Andrew Eyster is walked to load the bases. But Josiah Sightler grounds to 1st to end the threat.....

0-0 top 2nd.....

Arkansas' hitting has been strong this season, but their pitching has been modest. Especially their starting pitching - 3 of their 5 pitchers with 5+ starts have 4.00+ ERAs, and the 4th has a 3.55 ERA.

Their relievers have most of their win decisions - their top reliever, Kevin Kopps, has a 1.12 ERA in 16 appearances (0 starts) and is 6-0 with 4 saves. He's also the team's leader in strikeouts with 54 in 32.0 innings. Then there's Ryan Costeiu who is 5-1 in 15.0 innings on 15 appearances (0 starts), but a 5.40 ERA, Caden Monke who is 4-0 in 18.0 innings in 15 appearances (0 starts), but a 5.00 ERA, and Jaxon Wiggins who is 3-0 in 12.1 innings on 12 appearances (0 starts), but a 5.11 ERA.

The thing is, our batters need to hit these guys, and hope our pitchers hold down the Razorbacks' own bats enough to make it count. Looks like their starters generally don't last long and give up runs, but their batters hit them out of getting losses as a result. Our own pitchers need to have strong outings in this series....

1-0 Arkansas bottom 4th inning:

Nothing doing in the 3rd inning.

Eyster is walked to lead off the inning. Sightler strikes out.

Burgess doubles in Eyster to tie the game!!

A new pitcher comes in for Arkansas - it's Ryan Costieu (5.40 ERA).....

Callil pops out. Heinrich strikes out, but the game is tied up....

1-1 top 5th inning......

1-1 top 5th inning:

Farr is still in. He gets a hat trick of three fly outs to retire the side in order 1-2-3. He now has thrown 74 pitches in 5.0 innings, not too bad.

bottom 5th inning:

Top of the order for the Gamecocks - Allen grounds out. Wimmer strikes out. Clarke reaches 1st on an error by the 3B, but tries to stretch it to 2B and is out at 2B for the final out. The out call at 2B is reviewed, and it stands.

1-1 top 6th......

1-1 bottom 6th inning:

Mendham is walked to lead off for the Yardcocks. Eyster is hit by pitch! Yardcocks at 2B and 1B with 0 outs. We got something heating up here.

New pitcher time for Arkansas - it's Caden Monke (5.00 ERA)......

Sightler attempts a sacrifice bunt - fouls it out to 1st. Everyone stays on base. Crap - it's not often I remember the team fouling out on bunt attempts this season - that was a bad time to do it.

Burgess grounds into a double play to kill the inning. Crappers!

1-1 top 7th inning......

1-1 top 7th inning:

Farr steps up. The lead-off Arkansas batter singles. The next batter homers them both in. 3-1 Arkansas.

This is just too good a hitting lineup to play around with. Farr still in - the next batter flies out for the 1st out. The next batter reaches safely when Farr muffs the grounder. He advances to 2nd on a wild pitch. The next batter lines out to Heinrich at 3rd - the Hog on 2B led off 2B towards 3B on the play: Heinrich throws wide to 2nd to attempt to get him out for the 2nd error of the inning, and he ends up at 3B anyways.

The next batter bunt singles in the man on 3rd for the 4th run for Arkansas. The next batter flies out to end the inning, but the Gamecocks are in a hole. That should be it for Farr.....

4-1 Arkansas, bottom 7th inning......

4-1 Arkansas bottom 7th inning:

New pitcher for Arkansas - Kopps, the big closer for them. This is how Arkansas got to #1 in the nation, folks. Their hitters get it done, and their pitchers somehow hang in there until Kopps comes in to seal the deal.

Callil strikes out, Heinrich strikes out, Allen grounds out.....

4-1 Arky top 8th.....

4-1 Arkansas top 8th inning:

Wesley Sweatt in for Farr. I think the coaching staff is looking towards going 2 for 2 the rest of the series.

The lead-off Arky batter singles. The next batter doubles and they are at 3B and 2B with 0 outs. Not good.

The next batter singles in a run, 5-1 now. That's it for Sweatt. John Gilreath comes in - he inherits men on 3B and 2B, and still 0 outs.

The first batter for Gilreath grounds out to 3B. The runners can't move. The next batter hits into a fielder's choice at shortstop: he's safe at 1B, but the SS throws home to Burgess ahead of the attempt at home by the base-runner at 3rd - he returns to 3rd, but the runner previously at 2B is already there staring at him, and he's got nowhere to call home. He's out for the 2nd out.

The next batter is walked to load the bases. Let's get this one, John!

The next batter grounds to 1st - Mendham to Gilreath for the final out.

5-1 Arkansas bottom 8th......

Not sure Sweatt was the right pitcher to being in there. But like you said, the staff may be already looking to next 2 games.
