2021 GamecockFanatics.com Game Week #1 Discussion Thread: Eastern Illinois

Think the Gamecocks have a coach that can build a solid foundation. Like all foundations cannot be built on sand will sink. Gamecocks will win Saturday night. The staff is rock solid and a good place to build a foundation on. Gamecocks do have some very good talent but going to need much more. Gamecocks not given much of a chance this year in wins, I feel this staff will build a good solid one, got to lay the foundation first. Then Gamecock fans can enjoy it if it is done right for a very long time to come.

Gamecocks 1 -0 in an easy one to start the season. :football-trophy-smiley-emoticosmall:

Welcome back!

The Gamecocks should be able to line up and hand it off to our RBs and win the game by 40 plus points. Its that simple.

The past few years you could watch any other NCAAF game and even the losing team would be better at the fundamentals than us.  It has been just dumbfounding to me.

I can't predict the number of wins, but I believe Shane and his staff will bring an across-the-board improvement in fundamentals this season and we will have a solid winning season.

That's all I know at this point.

I am really hoping that we get to experience this weekend, what Clemson experiences most weeks.  Playing an opponent so crappy, that you get your third and fourth string players a decent amount of playing time.

That's enough for a 1-0 start East Carolina on the road will be interesting. See how the season plays out. What I love wit Beamer and staff is that they are very hungry. I know you are going to hate this statement but this reminds me of Dabo.

I'm glad he doesn't plan to focus on weekly uniform announcements.  Who cares what combo they wear, just win.

Garnet jerseys, Garnet helmets and black pants. Me second that!!

I've enjoyed reading this thread and the optimism is palpable, which has not been something Gamecock fans have felt in a while. Gotta say I am right there with you guys. I really like Beamer and our coordinators, at least what I've seen of them in the interview room. I think they're smart guys who can get the most out of our players. And I also hope to see big improvements in fundamentals, after three years of watching DB's running around looking lost and a very predictable offense. Finally it's time to stop talking and start playing. I'll be there in my upgraded seats which I never had a chance to enjoy last year since I sat out 2020, and I can't wait. The wife and I are a little nervous about being among 70,000+ people even if we are outside, and we haven't been in a huge crowd like that in a long time. But I have to be there and I'm really excited. I hope the first game of the Beamer era is something we all look back on as a BIG milestone for USC.

We will blow them out. It will be over by the middle of the 2nd quarter. The offense will run its play book and not hold nothing back. With Doty out you want see as many read options and designed QB runs. We will let the horses eat at running back and throw a few passes to WRs TEs and RBs. I would also look to see what happens at slot with DK and JuJu. Defensively I bet they will run bland schemes unless UEI shows they can move the ball. We should see a lot of newbies play on Saturday night. 50-6.

Dabo pulled off the impossible feat of going from interim to regular HC in the middle of a bad season at Clemson.  They both have the desire, but good people skills is what has made Dabo and Shane successful up to this point.

A possible scenario is that Shane goes 3-0 beating UGA along the way and Clemson losing to UGA to go 2-1 and essentially be on the CFP bubble the rest of the season.

DJU looked good last year, but he doesn't have Trevor Lawrence as a back-up this year like Kelly Bryant was for Lawrence.

Shane is an unproven HC, but he doesn't have the baggage of failure at UF that Muschamp had when he came here.

Rather than hang 70 on Eastern Illinois and injure the elbow of the starting QB, I would like to see Beamer build up a strong lead and then substitute guys to build depth.  If he can do that in most of the games we're supposed to win, then we're back to 9 or 10-win seasons sooner than most people think.

One game at a time, though.

Agreed. The most important thing is to get the win - but IMO the second-most important thing isn't the amount of points we win by, but the experience for those down the two- and three-deep.

If we beat UGA and the Taters don't, I think we're going back to the good ole days this November.

#Fear the Finger.

Of course, which finger a Gamecock will use if that happens is entirely up to them.

LOL

Updates on future opponents' games thus far:

Tennessee beat Bowling Green 38-6 Thursday Night to open their season. The Vols led only 14-6 at the half, but made some adjustments and outscored the Falcons 24-0 in the 2nd half. The most major adjustment was relying fully on their run game, as Bowling Green proved unable to stop it, while the Vol passing game was a bit shaky with transfer dual threat QB Joe Milton (Michigan) at the helm. Tennessee rushed for 331 net yards on 64 attempts for a 5.2 ypc average, and 4 rushing touchdowns. Tiyon Evans led the way with 124 yds on 16 carries and 1 TD, while Jabari Small had 117 yds on 22 carries, and 1 TD as well. The Vols only totaled 23 loss of yards rushing, with 17 of those coming from Milton, who was sacked 3 times.

Milton was 11 for 23 through the air, for 139 yds and 1 touchdown. 39 of those passing yds came in the 2nd half. Bowling Green's own QB was decent, throwing 25 for 38 for 187 yds, but with 0 touchdowns. He was sacked only twice. The Falcons only managed 32 yards on the ground from 23 attempts, with 0 touchdowns.

Tennessee next ACC member Pittsburgh next Saturday in Knoxville. Will be interesting to see if the Panthers will be better able to contain the Volunteers' rush game, and if so, how the Vols respond with Milton and their passing game.....

Also, East Carolina fell to Appalachian State in Charlotte 33-19. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 20-6 first-half lead, and hung on the rest of the way, with both teams scoring even 13-13 after halftime. App State out-rushed the Pirates 226 yds on 36 carries (6.3 ypc) and 2 touchdowns versus East Carolina's 86 yds on 24 attempts (3.6 ypc) and 0 TDs. The Pirates did pass the ball well with their QB Holton Ahlers passing 22 for 40 for 295 yds, 2 TDs and 1 INT. App State threw a bit more efficiently if not prolifically, at 20 for 27 for 259 yds also with 2 TDs and 1 INT. But overall App State almost totaled 500 yards of offense against ECU.

So the Pirates will come in to Game #2 against us with a strong passing game showing, and a not so strong run game. They will have some defensive questions of their own against the run, where we hope to be at our strongest. We play on their field next week's Saturday, and they will be fired up to keep from going 0-2 on the season...
